Have you ever played a game like halo wars or something similar? i had an idea to give people the ability to enable a minimap feature in minecraft that works just like a map in a command and concur game.
HOW IT WORKS
the way that this map works is that it will be located on one of the corners of the player's screen and will start completely darkened out. as the player travels and becomes within range of any block, that block's type will appear as a colored square on the players map, for example: player comes in range of a grass block, this block appears next to the character's arrow in the center of the minimap as a small, green square. this also corresponds to other block types such as sand (light brown square) water(blue square) and so on.
if this applies to all surface blocks within range, the map will begin to develop as the player moves throughout his/her world.
OTHER FEATURES
The player will also be given the option to turn the minimap on/off when not needed.
also, the player will have the ability, preferably in the inventory window, to click a button that says "place marker" and the exact block that the player is standing on will have a flag on it. the flags options such as its size, color, or appearance can be changed in the options menu.
The flags that the player places will show up as flag icons in the player's minimap. these flags can be used to mark material locations, vantage points, or even just points of interest. when a player no longer needs a flag marker, it can be destroyed
IMPORTANT INFO
this minimap will spread cover a great distance around the player, probably twice the size of the max renderable distance. but the player still has to come into a set range of the blocks to make them appear and "un-darken" the map. only blocks on the top surface of the world will be shown on the map unless the surface blocks are altered. for example, because the map camera is positioned in a birds-eye-view manner there will be clusters of dark green in some explored places. these dark green clusters are the leaves of trees and are dark green because the minimap sees the top surface of that small area as leaves and not grass. if the player were to remove the tree then the map would refresh the blocks in the area as grass blocks, thus showing regular green squares on the minimap. also, players can place flag markers in cave and underground places, only the flag that is UNDER a surface block will be darkened or ghosted.
