There should be more ways for us Minecrafters to go get some fuel ( coal) without having our bodies burned, slashed, eaten, punctured, exploded, or just gnawed off. and having to constantly go into those dark, spooky caves and not knowing whether or not you're going to get your load of coal out safely. I know it's not THAT hard but it does get exhausting sometimes.
Because I find it annoying that I have to constantly keep going down in the mines to grab some coal and then once I have said coal it's always that grueling hike past all the things that want to tear your limbs in a slow, torturous way. Now chopping trees and getting some planks works too and it's renewable, that's great but if you're like me you're a little bit on the lazy side of things and going out with your axe and monotonously getting wood and burning it.
Let me get to my idea, there should be something of a windmill, ( which would lead to wind on high mountains or something but that's for another time) or mills like in the medieval days they would place it near water and voila you had a CONSTANT source of power going , no going out and collecting things only to have it explode and destroyed by a creeper who just wanted a hug, with this idea for a constant source of energy it would lead to parts, small flat planks, some nuts and bolts ( made from iron (duh :tongue.gif:) ) I only say parts because it should be hard to obtain. ALSO IT SHOULD WEAR DOWN ( caps so it's noticed xD)
What I mean by wear down it should take a VERY, very long time for it to wear down but there should be an animation for it wearing down ( maybe from crack in the planks or fan blades depending on which one you would like to make) and you should be able to repair it with a hammer and nails :biggrin.gif: just to get into the spirit of Minecraft.
There's alot more that could be added this right now is just floating around my head, but feel free to nag on this idea or improve my idea, either way some constructive criticism helps too. Thanks for readinh!! ^^ Hope this idea gets across to Notch!
*edit* I'm not JUST talking about powering your furnace!
nice! maybe add to the game findable oil underground.
Ooh, that wouldn't be to bad. Maybe with that could come some new mechanics to the game like a CAR maybe maybe I feel a a car maybe overkill but not a plane! :biggrin.gif:
Good idea, i'm sure there's dozens of uses for that!

How exactly does a windmill generate sufficient heat energy to smelt blocks? And how the hell is an energy supply that costs little (in terms of rarity of materials) and takes a long time to stop balanced in any way?

I'm not talking JUST about the furnace i'm talking about there should be some new items to support these items. Like a slaughterhouse for animals that's more fast, or a substitute for redstone if you don't want to go digging for it, or a small engine that could use a different fuel source for a hot-air balloon.
I'm talking about ENERGY for stuff.
Imma change the title real quick

Well since Minecraft TRIES to go for the realistic route, I see no problem with it. Look at a mill in real life all it is a some wood, metal, and some water, air, or fuel ( well i'm not so sure on fuel i'm not exactly an expert on mills :tongue.gif:).
But since it's a game I can see where you're coming from. And i'm also not just talking about supporting your furance i'm talking about a substitute for redstone or being able to not have to worry about energy needs for awhile, with this comes new items like hot air balloons, moving items like spinning blades of death, or a simple and fun wheel to spin on :tongue.gif:
I'm just trying to get some variety in the fuel/energy department other than coal and charcoal which I know doesn't take long to obtain but if you want to stay near home and whatnot and you go into you're mine chances are you're going to run into some creepers who want some of you coal and zombie to share your remains.

If by fuel you mean for a furnace then there are already loads of different things you can use as fuel.
I'm talking about variety for fuel rather than going into your cave getting some coal and along come some friends wanting your face to cook using you coal :tongue.gif:
And i'm not talking JUST talking about powering your furnace. With more fuel and energy around there should come new items.

I do support some more "mechanical" energy, as seen in dwarf fortress, with waterwheels powering axles which in turn power some kind of machinery,
However, this would be horribly imbalanced by the fact that we have INFINITE WATER! We need to get finite water with realistic flow first.
Infinite water? Look at our world! Sure it's not infinite but it's enough to not go away for A LONG while. No need to worry about that. Also I was thinking that Notch shold add some ravines and lakes, and rivers. rivers would be sooo cool.

BBCode Render failed due to reaching MaxNestingDepth(80) for Tag: spoiler
I didn't forget about charcoal.
