isn't it a much to have to explore the depths of the earth just to get slimeballs so you can make, for example, sticky pistons? I feel the jump (in difficulty of acquiring materials) between normal pistons and the sticky sort is too great for such closely-related blocks.
That's not to say that that slime should cease to have a use; it would still be possible to construct sticky pistons (or any other slime-using items that notch releases in later updates) with slimeballs. All I would like to do is to implement something that can be used as a replacement for slimeballs in a crafting recipe.
Recipe for paste (possible replacement for slimeballs):
<-- eggs
I used wheat because it makes sense to me to use flour in this recipe, which is mixed with eggs to form a paste. The stick presumably is just there to add wood fibres to the paste.
I think the crafting recipe for sticky pistons should change for when using paste; it should require more than one paste block above the piston (just to prevent paste being too easy a replacement).

I have been playing MineCraft since alpha
In over a year of playing I've met 2 slimes. And they didn't drop slimeballs.
