So basically, we've all been in the situation where we've pushed out several blocks using a sticky piston and then want to retract them. However, currently you can only pull back the block immediately in front of the piston.
I think that we should be able to use slime balls as a type of rudimentary adhesive. It would be able to applied to any face of a block, and when another block comes near it, they would stick together and move together when moved by a piston.
A piston would still only be able to push 12 blocks, but this would wildly simplify the process of creating a retractable structure like an elevator (which I have made, but believe me, it is a VERY difficult wiring challenge to get 12 sticky pistons to retract themselves back).
Breaking a block would destroy that blocks bonds, and would require more adhesive to be applied. Also, you could make water dissolve bonds adding some trap opportunities, but would also add some unnecessary complications.
Well as you said you can make retractable towers/bridges (I have made a retractable bridge so i know thats possable) so there is no need. It would be a cool thing but even more of a pain because when you make the "glue dissolve", wouldn't you have to put it back?
Also, the piston would only be able to move you up one block unless you add more and then there is no point in have the glue
