Shifting blocks like that isn't built into the block engine. How MOJANG managed to make pistons was they used a system where instead of moving a block, it is destroyed and re-placed at the location the piston pushed it to. So if pistons could push chests, it would destroy the chest, and remake it at the place where the piston pushed it. That would obviously destroy all the items in the chest, as the old chest would be gone, and the moved one would be a new chest.
I think pistons should be able to push chests, i dont see why they cant.

Maybe notch can find a fix for that, but mods may lock this thread now.
