How is this suggestion not useful...? You would be able to talk to people your playing with, i think its a great idea. And what if you dont know them, you just meet them in the game? Then you wouldnt skype with them, it would be so much more convenient just to talk right on minecraft through a mic. All other games have it so why cant Minecraft? It takes nothing away from the game.

Its not useful simply because it isn't viable. Minecraft is already suffering from high bandwidth constraints, you really think a server can handle streaming audio to every single player on top of that? I'll tell you what I think, I think you should use your damn head.

well it doesnt have to be like audio 100% of the time... he can program a "hold to talk" key function like some steam games have, and jeez chill :/

Have to agree with this. A server trying to do all this at once is not as efficient as 2 servers taking a portion of the load.

@acetyl to fix that all you need is an option in the server config to enable or disable it and players to have a button to enable or disable for just them.

Looking for a fully dedicated minecraft server with a great player base and friendly op's look no further apply HERE
Other games have voice support because they are played on a central server. Minecraft does not because it's up to whoever's hosting the server to supply it.

that doesnt make it less useful at all, just a little less practical. The host of the server could simply choose if he wanted to enable the feature or not depending on whether he was capable of running it.
There are much greater issues than VOICE with online play.
Why don't we first worry about ONLINE PLAY. Then we'll determine if we need voice support when we get a properly working and fully playable multiplayer with cooperative lag.
I agree I play on the LOTC rp server and the amount of lag coming from Minecraft really kills the mood. Combat is nigh impossible with multiplayer as it is.
Which is why I say:
Notch!?!
WHY U NO OPTIMIZE MINECRAFT!

People are going to crash the server by talking. Not to mention the annoying assholes shouting stupid crap into the mic.
Believe me, skype is better. You can choose to invite certain people.
Because it is made using JAVA as it is a comparatively easy API to write for and also allows for browser integration as well as multiple platform support.
This doesn't change the fact that JAVA is naturally top-heavy due to it's interpretted nature over a compiled one.
all are pefectly good options (or at least I'm told Vent is useful), and won't crash a Minecraft server.
Before Minecraft gets something like that, Notch is going to need to drastically improve SMP as far as performance goes. I can barely do anything on my own private server with two other friends, even less on a server like the Yogscast have with over 200.
Fail suggestion is fail.

So have you played any games with voice chat? Its not like that, I have played games with voice chat and never seen crying babies, I only have had positive experiences of voice chat.
I guess the biggest problem here is how it would work with minecraft, I dont mean that it would have cry babies, Well if minecraft is gonna have voice chat ever it means that it would have better server/host system.
You're ****ing joking right? The wording of your sentence makes the thoughts behind it more obvious than a medical abstract. Honestly, normally I just stay out of things, but your post is so ignorant, ill developed, and outright hollow that I almost have to oppose it. The contrast between how right you think you are, and how completely wrong you actually are, is as obvious as night and day. Think about what you just said, because clearly you dont have the background to even be giving your opinion.
You misspelled says . Also this suggestion isn't useful.

The last thing we need is a bunch of five year olds and twelve year olds screaming, crying, and yelling on MineCraft.
Edit: Its already bad enough we have to read their horribly constructed sentences, with ample grammar mistakes, and immature wording.
