So, this thought came to mind in the midst of traveling long distance across a Minecraft multi server. I was moving along from a distant caving outpost, with a inventory filled with items and well, feeling quite ill at ease about the prospect. My proposal comes in the form of two features, One, A trade cart and two, a type of Oxen Mob.
In regards to the Oxen mob, i've considered that they should share some of the code with wolves. In regards to the Stay command and the follow. They could be established to spawn in the plains like Biomes and Forest biomes. Like Oxen, they could be coded to spawn in herds. They could be tamed by feeding them something like Wheat, which would in turn make them follow you in a manner similar to Wolves. To add a little more weight, They could also serve as an addition Leather source, or maybe a food material. I was considering that in regards to tamed Oxen, Mobs like Skeletons and Zombies could be hostile to them, Lending period caravan risks into the picture and even encouraging people to make fenced enclosures and barns for when they are not in use.
The Trade cart is what came to mind for a response to the general paranoia of carrying large supplies of Ores back to a distant home base. In Nature it could work similar to the Chest Mine carts, But, Be coded to attach to an Oxen. Given Oxen coding, you could fill the container to the brim and command the Oxen to follow, If you die on the way, you'd just need to reach the Oxen's last position, rather than loosing the materials.
I apologize for the lack of a crafting table example image, though i'll put together a makeshift one.
I'm not totally sure of what could be the ingredients for the cart, i don't quite think there are any wheel equivalents in Minecraft at the moment, and the current example seems too easy to produce.
I think the Inclusion of Oxen/trade carts would solve a nice pracital problem presented to those who don't have the resources for extensive mine cart tracks and the respective components. Not a very fast process of resource movement, but a practical means. Could be usefull for a major project as well, Leading a train of Oxen Carts to your build site and telling them to stay, allowing you to gather supplies at will.

You obviously put a lot of thought into that, well done.
