I love pistons. They let me make secret doors to my evil lab where I experiment with more pistons. They let me push tracks left and right instead of just using a corner-track.
They also force me to spend hours making a slime trap, but let's not talk about that.
Anyways, I've thought up a couple improvements that could be made to pistons. I know that one or both of them may be unoriginal, but I haven't seen any.
1) Extended Length. This is probably going through the mind of a lot of people. Instead of making difficult, faulty systems just to get to pistons to extend - and retract - properly on top of each other (if it's even possible, I've yet to get it to work), why not let us adjust their extension length. Sure the idea of two blocks length coming out of one block seems a bit like Mary Poppin's purse, but it would help us achieve even more wonders with pistons. I'm not saying a 12-block long piston, but maybe 3 or 4. To choose what length we would have, it would work much like a redstone repeater - right clicking extends it one block.
2) Sticky Blocks. This is a handy idea I thought of to let us do more with pistons than just push straight rows of blocks. Let us use slimeballs on blocks to make that side of the block "sticky". Any block touching that side would be glued to the block. This would allow us to do simpler tasks (like pulling a row of blocks), or more complicated ones (like pulling an L-shaped row of blocks. Exciting.). Or, if the block was attached to, say, sand, it would fall with the sand (maybe that's pushing it a bit).

Thanks for the lol, that was good.
Anyway, I definitely like the idea of extended pistons. But instead of having a single piston block that can have it's extension toggled, I think it would be easier to have seperate crafting recipes for different pistons with different lengths. For example, putting 2 pistons together in a crafting table makes a piston that extends 2 blocks out instead of 1. Putting 3 pistons together in a crafting table makes a piston that extends 3 blocks out instead of 1. Etc etc, but I think the limit for how far out any piston can extend should be like 3 or 4.
