Personally sleeping has been the major issue with me every since beds were released. Yes harhar. Although I realize you saying, if you don't like beds just don't use them, would leave me unable to respond just hear me out for a few seconds.
In a nutshell (just so you aren't forced to tl;dr):
My suggestion is that beds should take damage when removed and placed so that you can't dig a hole and sleep. So I suggest a new bed "rag" That lets you sleep on the go and takes much less damage. However there's a bonus for sleeping, especially sleeping in beds. You can also have a special feature to let you pitch a tent (in the literal term) to let you sleep without being attacked.
Well first of all beds should take damage when being broken. They have a durability of five breaking. They don't take damage from sleeping, not to worry. This is to prevent you from quickly using your bed as a tent. I suggest the "RAG" simply created from two pieces of wool, bottom left side and bottom center. Which has twenty breaks, four times as much as the tent.
However to prevent users from just using a rag instead of a bed there's "stamina hearts" rewarded whenever you sleep, perhaps in the future you could use stamina in other ways or have other ways . These are like armor, but they expire at night as soon as you can sleep, of course you can use these when exploring dark areas where mobs still might spawn. But, rags do not set spawnpoints. ~guardiant7 thanks.
However rags have a advantage over beds too. Although more portable it can be crafted into a tent. Which can be placed anywhere without you being in danger of being attacked, however there are several rules.
A tent is basically a rag The log is a rag
Crafted like this.
1: The tent must be built:
When placing the tent it's only a rag with a piece of blue cloth, a few sticks and string it must be punched for five consecutive seconds to build the tent BEFORE the player has the ability to go to sleep, so you can't quickly make one during the night and sleep soundly escaping enemies.
2: The tent must not be under rain. If it is raining, or snowing, or any other future condition the tent must be sheltered under an object, in order for you to be whisked away into sleep.
I like the idea of making a tent to have easy, portable shelter, but it doesn't seem right for this game for two reasons. One, a tent wouldn't hold back mobs while you sleep because its made of cloth. Two, how would a tent look in MC? The world is made from blocks while cloth isn't.
I like the idea about beds breaking if you keep picking them up though.

There's only one way to find out. We must tie him up and throw him in the lake. If he lives, he is a whitch. If he dies, he is human. MY LOGIC BEATS YOURS.

Perhaps have a two squared bock and two blocks high? Have a square blue flap with stakes planted into the ground? with a two pieces of cloth like a non-zip tent door?

That sounds good. I figure tents might also be made from smaller cubes maybe a third the size of normal cubes so that the tent fits in better.

Quite simple, thanks!
