My idea is to have a night-vision device/item that can be worn on the head. (just like a pumpkin or helmet) Personally, I think that the crafting recipe should include (a) slimeball(s). Ideally this would cause blocks and/or everything to appear as if it was being lit with a brighter light than the 4 or so that is normal for night-time. This would be very valuable to monster-hunters, or monster-avoiders that travel at night. My apologies if this or a similar idea has already been brought up.

I agree, there needs to be some way to see better at night. Requiring slimeballs is a good idea too, as that makes it rare enough not to become overpowered.
I'd say it should increase the light level by a certain amount (say, +4), so if it's pitch black, the user wouldn't be able to see normally. And maybe, -1 level during the day? (Idk, to discourage constant usage?)
Like your ideas Raynomd, was going to include my very similar specific ideas, but I thought I would wait a few days until I got noticed, misjudged the forum speed though, anyway, I would like to add my crafting idea:
(lens)(leather)(lens)
and for lenses :
(no item) (iron ingot) (no item)
(iron ingot) (slimeball) (iron ingot)
(no item) (iron ingot) (no item)
But a simpler recipe that I would personally prefer would use slimeballs instead of lenses, it depends on how complicated we (meaning everyone) would like for this to get. I want to use lenses, but not have them be useless beyond the function of making goggles.
No, doesn't seem Minecrafty at all. Too, "high-tech," in my opinion.
Not to be mean, but if we can have a map that draws itself, we could probably make a helmet thingy that allows us to see at night. Although I have suddenly realized the truth you have stated, I would prefer to have seen the three creepers that killed me (once each) while I was running back to my base one night. I'm not going to stop wishing for "night vision" in Minecraft, but I now realize that it is a far less solid possibility than I first thought.

NO!, That would defeat the whole purpose of Minecraft, survival. Minecraft would be too easy if you could see in the dark, not as dangerous. Remember this is like cavemen times you don't have fancy technologies cavemen didn't even have the brains to think of doing so. If you want to see in the dark better then maybe have a hand-held torch that lights up like 6 blocks around you as you walk, much more realistic. If you want to defeat the main purpose of minecraft get a mod.

I'm not trying to be high-tech :sad.gif: I'm suggesting a possible alteration to minecraft, which may or may not make it better. I just want a way to see mobs and blocks and everything else at night. I have suggested that an extremely rare item (slimeballs) be included in the crafting recipe. It might be a good idea to add glowstone to the crafting recipe so that this is more like a lit helmet. I'm not trying to ruin minecraft, and I now feel a little ashamed for trying to jump the 50-ish years between MC and night vision. It is just something I would like, right next to winning the lottery, and getting a new computer. (plans a for lit helmet thread)
I don't see why it wouldn't fit well. Its simple and not too overpowered. Minecraft doesn't actually have any "fantasy theme" that a portion of players seem to perceive in the game.
The advantage is that it just raises light levels for the player that is wearing it. This can be counterbalanced by tightening the window of vision, similar to how wearing a pumpkin on your head restricts your vision.

This would be a good idea, giving you better night vision but with the added risk of having enemies sneak up on you (as this night vision helmet would not give of light then hostile mobs could spawn all around you).
