I'd like to suggest MC add a guest mode, which you could also call "ghost mode". When in ghost mode, a person's avatar would be partially transparent, and would be able to pass through closed doors and hatches, but would be otherwise unable to interact with the world. Contact with fire/lava/cactus/monsters would kill. A person who has downloaded minecraft would be able to log in to servers as a ghost without needing a paid account. A server setting would also be able to make all non-op players ghosts.
This mode would have three purposes: 1. Allow people to try minecraft before paying for it. 2. Allow people to tour friends' and colleagues' worlds without being MC knowledgeable. 3. Let anal people block changes to their worlds.
This sounds like a free trial (we already have), mixed with piracy, mixed with classic, and garnished with fail.
