Stick + Redstone = Redstone column
Edit: (I was thinking a stick between two redstone)
It would act just like redstone, except it can exist in 3 dimensional space without being on another surface, it would also be able to carry signals upward.

Everything but the recipe is a good idea. Stick and redstone makes the torches. But they should go vertical.

I'm sure we can put our differences beside us. For Science. You monster.
There is already a way of making a redstone current go directly upwards, AND downwards. The downwards one is a bit hard to explain, but the upwards one is placing a stone block, then placing a redstone torch on that block, then placing a stone block on the redstone torch, then another redstone torch on the stone block. Repeat as desired. You can wire this into a circuit by powering the lowest stone block with redstone. As long as the number of torches is even, the signal at the bottom=the signal at the top. If it's not even, then make an inverter or something.
I suppose the purpose of a redstone column would be like repeaters in that it makes it simpler and more compact.
