I was thinking that often when you explore caves you come over a huge hole in the floor that you will want to find out how deep it is before going down. Right now the only way of doing this is carefully climbing down placing torches to light it up, but what if we could have throw-able torches?
I was first messing with the idea of fire arrows, but since the game mechanics will not allow for moving light (I believe I have heard) then that wouldn't really work.
So what I'm suggesting is that when throwing torches with the "Q" button the torch would make a check when hitting the ground. If it's possible the torch would then plant itself as if planted by the player. Doing this check would prevent the torch from planting itself on glass, on block that is occupied either by another torch, ladder or something. So if a torch is thrown into water it would not be planted.
This would be very useful when you want to light up a underground cavern to see whats down there. So if you stand on the edge of a large dark abyss you could throw a torch down there. If the throw is successful and the torch plants itself you would be able to see what's down there. By using the normal throwing mechanics you would prevent this from being overpowered since there is limits to how far you can throw.
If this needs to be further nerfed then a torch planted after a throw would uproot itself after say 30 seconds.

That's why the torch isn;t lit while it's moving....
Did you read the post? He said the exact same thing.
Whoops I misread it. I'll edit that post.

It sounds like an interesting idea, but then I remembered, :Lava:. Drop a bucket of the stuff down a shaft, voila, it's lit!
Also, if torches were throwable, that would cause people to want everything to be throwable. (Throwable swords! Throwable Cactus! Throwable arrows! :tongue.gif:) Interesting idea, but I don't think it's necessary.
I think this is a pretty awesome idea. I don't know how hard it would be to implement though.
Well there is already a collision check (there has to be or we would just fall forever lol). So adding an If statement to check to see if the torch can actually be placed on the block it hit, and if it can it deletes the item entity and spawns a lit torch on that block, and if it can't it just leaves it be.
Edit: @Raynomd: The difference is this idea is good, and those ideas are retarded :biggrin.gif:

I think wall support should be added, after all, you never know, the floor might be covered in something that would prevent the torch from planting.
