I know, this looks like more of an advert for a mod, but I'm really just asking for a patch with this in it. It's explaining how good it is.
Dynamic lighting is a great mod that doesn't hurt anything. I've used this mod and it's just incredible. Here's a video if you haven't seen it already.
Basically, this mod makes it so when you pull out a torch, the area around you lights up as if you've placed it, and you may move around with this light. This works with throwing the torch too. Anything that "shines" like redstone, fire, glowstone, torches, redstone torches, ect will light up when thrown, placed, or equipped. Also, when mobs are on fire, they don't give off light unless the fire spreads. Now, the fire actually comes to life and gives off light. You may be asking: "Well, that's pretty pointless. Now you need just one torch and you'll be fine." That's completely wrong. When you leave an area out of a torch's reach, the area is dark again, allowing mobs to spawn. Placing torches is still necessary to control cave systems efficiently. This mod simply helps to allow an easier way to light up your world. It's truly a cool mod to have in your game, because it gives you a bonus without hurting anything. This is NOT my mod, all credit goes to it's creator, but I just find this mod so suited for official Minecraft that I thought I'd bring it up. Like Smooth Lighting, this should also be a toggle-able option, obviously named "Dynamic Lighting - ON/OFF" Try it out for yourself! You'll love it.
Another awesome feature from Terraria making its way to Minecraft, I approve :biggrin.gif:
Actually, if I'm correct, then Terraria came out a few months ago. I'm pretty sure that the earliest version I know of is 1.4_01. This isn't from Terraria, and for some reason it annoys me when everyone thinks these things come from Terraria.
I imagine you could, say.. throw a torch down a hole or something, but the video itself shows off little that you couldn't already do by just placing a torch. The distance that you can throw an item is considerably shorter than the reach you have for placing items and blocks. As for walking around with a torch, just bring more torches. It's more sane to light up the whole cave instead of leaving darkness behind you anyway.

I'm almost 100% positive that this have been suggested before but i'll suggest it again anyways

Yes, but it's a cool feature if you just want to walk down a small cave.
Actually, I think I remember someone saying that Notch said he wouldn't implement this because he didn't like the look of it. :dry.gif:
No, the reason notch hasn't implemented it is because of the multiplayer component and bandwidth / server load issues. Lighting plays an important role in gameplay, controlling visibility, mob spawns, etc. So you cant simply have it processed and clientside and occasionally synced to the server. Its more a technical issue. I see absolutely no reason why this can't be implemented for singleplayer only though. Honestly, I'm losing faith in notch. Yes yes, I understand this is his game etc etc, so dont waste your breath on that, but really now, I could care less about some adventure update. No dynamic lighting? No native support for high res texture packs? No anti-aliasing? No mip mapping? No anistropy? And to top it all off, some half functional, thrown in attempt at occlusion culling. Minecraft is a fairly complex game on the technical side of things, but this is 2011, and this is a pc game. Those are all extremely basic features to have.

I don't often follow threads I post in. If you'd like a response about something, send me a PM.

Where can I get it?
