I was playing Minecraft 1.7.2 recently and I was exploring a huge forest that I was spawned into and I was on my way back to my house that I had spent countless hours building. I was exploring for rare natural materials (sugarcane, wild grass, mushrooms). My house is in the nearby desert and I got lost on my way back to my house and ended up dieing and losing all of my rare resources. And so I came upon the idea of bread crumbs in Minecraft. Im not a modder and I was hoping that Notch might see this or hear about this and put it in a update. Im thinking that you put bread in your crafting square and it turns to bread crumbs that automatically fall from your inventory as you walk around and show you a line back to where you started using them. Im just putting the idea out there and would love everyones feed back. Thanks for reading,
But actually, that is very cool. Great idea. I'm not a modder, but I think copying the texture of the redstone, making it look like the bread's color, and placeable, should be fairly easy.
That's a pretty cool idea! I guess it would function something like redstone in the way it goes on the ground. Then it could decompose after a couple weeks or so. I like it!

Charcoal - The most underrated, unappreciated thing in minecraft. Try spending a whole night without finding any coal, then talk.
I don't want to take the wind out of your sails here, but we've already got maps and compasses that point you back to your spawn.
There are also several mods that make realcompasses, so you can find your way more easily.
And there are plenty of mod that just warp you back home whenever you want.
I think it's a great idea. Sure, there are already other methods of landmarking or trailmaking, but this would be a specific mechanic, rather than a workaround.
And it could lead to other mechanics, too. What if chickens WERE attracted to the breadcrumbs? Added farming bonus. There could be a recipe that involves crafting the breadcrumbs together with grass seeds and wheat to create animal feed to attract animals to our farms, once animals become persistent.
Hey! You could even make a trough out of three buckets and two sticks which could be placed and filled with feed to keep your animals happy when you disappear spelunking for several days! The possibilities keep coming!

the compass is useless if you build away from the spawn and to see your house on the map yyou need a big house. and some people don't want to use mods!

Or. Redstone.
