First off this requires a sword, no karate chopping...
You start the same way holding your sword upright.
Left-clicking will swing the sword downwards, holding it there will keep it down. Letting go will lift the sword back up.
I'm going to call that a "slash" for now.
To preform a swipe you hold down the left-click button and look left or right quickly. In the game, your sword turns sideways.
Lastly, a stab would be holding the left-click button and running forward. Obviously this would be unfair if you could just charge a creeper and automatically kill one, so it would give a small amount of damage, and creepers would be able to detonate at that range.
Right-clicking would do the same as above as right clicking, except from down up.
What I was thinking was holding down the right mouse button and moving the mouse would keep the screen still and swing the sword. You could still simply attack by clicking as well. I suppose this could also be used for blocking, but that would mostly be for PVP, not for fighting mobs.
Good suggestion, but I'm still not too sure about stabs.

I don't know sled teams but I do know I put my dog on an electric treadmill once and dangled a chicken leg. Treadmill puppy ensued.
-Swing mouse one way, you attack in that direction.
-You can hold attacks by holding the left mouse button.
-You can block incoming attacks by swinging your mouse and right clicking. This also incurs durability damage on a successful block, but you take no damage.
-Bows can be held back for greater power. If held too long, you will lose accuracy. If implemented, Crossbows would not have this drawback.
Now if spears and controllable mounts were implemented, you could do this as well:
-At maximum speed, you will "couch" with your spear. Sideswiping an enemy will result in an instant kill, at the cost of 2 durability points.

Maybe a stab will launch the mob closer, and to one side?

Yeah I think that's pretty good.
