First off i guess a lot of my ideas could be from playin wow too much and the love of giant bosses being taken down by a group or a single hero is epic in my opion.
If your near bosses no other monsters will spawn.
Some bosses will only be able to be seen in certain difficultys and not peace mode.
If put into the game bosses should be able to be turned on or off.
Shields:I don't want to go into great detail about shields as i have good ideas for bosses. But shields could be dropped off mobs or crafted by the player with the use of any material that is used to make swords and ect.
When the player wants to 'use' the shield he will have to bring it into his hand and press right mouse to start blocking. Damage will be reduced by how good the shield is from 50%-75% or up to 95%. Just having the shield out in hand will not block or reduce and damage. To keep blocking you must keep the mouse button held down. The shields will have great amount of durability as to not break during combat with a boss.
Bosses: The concept of a boss is a fairly larger creater compair to the normal size of your character. Defeating it will take a knowlage of how the boss fights and it's strengths and weaknesses and how to counter-act each special ability the boss may have. Bosses should be hard to defeat and take planning and preperation.
Before engaging a boss the player mite want lots of food, a strong melee wepeon, arrows and a bow, and a new *shield*.
When the boss is defeated it will have a chance to drop really good items and some items that couldn't be gathered any other way possibly. Such as armor that must be farmed off the boss, or weps or shields. And maybe building and crafting materials. Or hides to make leather armor from like a dragon or something.
I will now give an example of a complex fight that could take place.
Dragon boss: This boss is fairly larger then the player with wings and a long tail and claws.
The fight will be seperated into 3 stages.
*the surroundings is flat grassland by the boss there are 2 eggs about 4x4 blocks in size and in between these two eggs lay a sleeping dragon, once the eggs or the boss is attacked phase 1 starts, or if the player gets within a certain range*
Stage 1: **100% hp** The main goal in phase 1 is to weaken the dragon far enough to force her to take flight. Total time in phase 1 with correct damage output should be around 54 seconds w/ only 2-3 deep breathes
-Dragon-
Auto attack- every 2-5 sec the dragon will deal 2-5 damage 1-3.5 or so w/ armor reduction .5-1 w/ shield blocking
Deep breathe- Ignores armor, The dragon will start to seep fire from her teeth, after 2 seconds of warning a flame jet will cover a large cone area twards the player, if the player moves the dragon will follow him with the flame breathe. *charges 2 sec, lasts 7sec deals 5damage per sec total: 35 damage (counter-act this by switching from your melee wepeon to your shield and face the dragon as she breathe's for 7 sec) total damage taken if done correctly will end as 2.5 points.
Phase 2: **75% hp** Air phase Lasts 1 minute and 25 sec *the dragon will take flight into the air being unabled to be targeted by melee attacks* The goal here is to kill each egg one at a time, a small whelp about the same size as the player will appear in each dead egg and start to attack the player, the player must kill each egg and whelp to force the dragon back onto the ground. The dragon will circle the player and preform abilitys while in flight. projectiles will be deflected back to the ground. Killing each egg and whelp will take 25 sec + 7 sec from deep breathe.
-Dragon-
Flame ball: Every 5-7 seconds the dragon will launch fire balls to the player Deals 5 damage and ignores armor(counter-act by moving out of the area of effect) Also sets the ground on fire, dealing .5 damge every sec if stood in. If shield blocked by the player or struck the player is lit on fire dealing 1dmg ever sec for 5 sec.
Deep Breathe: Same as in phase 1 but done from the air (Counter-act by switching from melee wep to the shield and facing whichever way the dragon has decided to go.)
-Whelp-
Auto attack: Deals 1-2 dmg every 2-3 sec, w/e reduce armor .5-1 damage. *Ignores shield*
On Death: Once the player kills the whelp in the mother dragon will become *Engraged* if in the air the dragon will use the ability Deep breathe. If the whelp dies in phase 1 or phase 3 (ground phase) The mother become enraged attacking the player 10 times in 3 seconds w/o charge or warnings.
Protection: When any whelp is alive and out of the egg all other whelps and the mother dragon will deal 50% more damage. This is stackable to increase damage output by 100% once the whelp dies the stack falls off.
Phase 3: **75% hp**After 1minute and 25 sec are up OR if both of the whelps are killed and the mother has been through 2 deep breathes she will land on the ground if standing under her you will take massive damage. Any eggs that are not broke will be released once she lands. The goal of this stage is to finish off the dragon, if the whelps are alive your screwed.
-Dragon-
Auto attack: Same as phase 1
Claw swipe: charge time 2 sec, if struck the player without a shield active the damage is 3 or lower depending on armor and the player is unable to move or eat food or attack (stunned) for 5 seconds, if the swipe hits the shield the dragon is stunned for 5 seconds and takes 100% more damage from attacks. (Counter-act by switching to your shield once you notice her claw is glowing red for 2 seconds, once she is stunned deal massive amounts of damage to her) She uses this ability every 10-20 sec or so (depending on dmg scaling it could be way off and what not lol)
Dread: Every time the dragon uses Claw swipe her next claw swipe will damage the player regardless of shield/armor untill a single strike will kill the player from full hp. (counter-act by kiling the boss before she reaches the magical number which will instantly kill you).
Last Stand: As the boss reaches 10% hp her auto attack in increase in speed and she will launch a final swipe with only a 1sec charge (at 5% hp or lower). Durning her being stunned she should easly die if swipe didn't kill you from dread stacks being too high.
Thats just a little fight i came up with and here is how you would defeat her:
In phase one just attack the boss and defend with your shield as she deep breathes, and ignore the eggs for now. You must eat food if your health gets too low but in this phase your health will not spike. Once your get her to 75% hp (or so depending on scaling and math math math) You need to book it to the eggs and kill one egg at a time. Make sure to move around and stay off the fire on the ground, the whelps should only take awhile of beating to kill them. After each one dies make sure to swap to your shield and block the deep breathe. Once both of the whelps are dead the boss will try to land on you so move out of the way or you will have to eat food from a massive dmg from the boss. In the final phase it is important to make sure you don't get stunned for any amount of time as if you have low hp she could kill you off so keep your hp topped off with food. After a couple of swipes she should be getting ready to die and you need to keep your hp topped off so she doesn't one shot you with a swipe. If your too slow on the damage to the boss she will kill you no matter what if her Dread stacks get too high. Or you could die by her swipe if you are low on hp in the first place. When going into 10% hp make sure your health is topped off with food and get ready for a 1sec charged swipe that could kill you if you don't block it you will die but if you do block it she will die.
Thats just a quick little run down on a possible boss fight in minecraft! I love creating ideas about bosses and i have loads more that i could quickly put down in suggestions if people like this idea.
Grand Plan for bosses: This is the idea that you must farm a boss for a set of armor or weapons that are NEEDed to defeat a stronger boss than what you farmed items from. Like you mite need to defeat the dragon boss for a full set of dragon hide armor and flame protector's shield and the bone arrows that must be used in another boss fight that deals fire damage and you have the hide of the dragon to protect you, otherwise the boss would be undoable. But if you break those items Or die with them you must refarm them, so stocking up on items would be a good idea, and special craftable arrows from dragon bones that deal more damage or can only hurt that boss.
Now these ideas mite not appeal to all of minecraft community but this would add lots of flavor to an allready great game!

All Notch has to do is add a shield slot. You'd make a wooden shield and cover it with leather or different metals... :biggrin.gif:
Depends if the shield only added armor and couldn't use it to block with it wouldn't be worth applying. But if you could equip the shield in "off hand" slot and press a button to block with it then it would be worth something imo.
I agree with bosses if they're only in dungeons.
Dungeons would have to be larger.
Other than that it's an amazing idea.
I'm not too sure about items you can only find from the mob, because bosses would have to be more common, and what if you didn't want them?
I think that the boss drops a key with a certain color (depending on boss) which is used to open the chest of the same color in the same dungeon. This could lead to locked chests in multi-player if you found one, but that's a different story...
The way you've said it, this could badly/negatively affect gameplay in several ways. And I'm not so sure on how well these fit Minecraft in some cases.
