Pistons have great potential when it comes to complex mechanical creations.
However, sticky pistons can only stick to a block if the piston itself is on a non-piston base - this causes problems when using multiple pistons in a row.
This eliminates the potential for hidden staircases, automated elevators, more powerful redstone/piston compounded devices, etc.
It would add greatly to the potential of Minecraft creations for pistons to be able to stick no matter what their base is attached to.

its not that you cant use them at all. its just that they are really annoying in the way they work. in order for the pistion to be able to extend the piston on top of it has to be in the retracted position. meaning that if you have 3 or 4 pistons it has to go out and come back in the right order from them to work or stay attached. so going out they all have to be in and it has to start from 1 - 2 - 3 - 4. and coming back in go 4 - 3 - 2 - 1. but i do agree that they could use some work.

I can help you build a hidden staircase or elevator. I know lots of things about pistons and redstone. Just join my server later today when it goes online. The thread is in my sig.
Hidden staircases are actually pretty easy to build, it just takes some time and patience to work the timings with redstone repeaters.
However, elevators with vanilla pistons are seemingly impossible, or at the very least are very impractical and don't reset themselves. This is something that Notch really needs to change, however it's more of a matter of allowing sticky pistons to pull more than one block/pull an extended piston than what you're talking about.
You can actually make some complex piston devices, but again, those take some time and patience working with redstone repeaters, and are a bit of a b**** to get just right.
Notch/Jeb need to modify the pistons. People were expecting them to be more like the mod, and instead we got a very buggy watered down version of it. I think they get the idea, though, so we don't need to have every other thread suggesting something new for the pistons.

I understand the issue of timing, and I HAVE built hidden staircases.
However, my game seems to act differently than you guys' - sticky pistons will NOT stick to blocks unless their base is attached to something other than a piston head.
