I think the minecraft physical world is a little unrealistic, and I had a few ideas to help make it a little less 4th wall punching. I know, some of you are already growning, "HNNNNG WHY U HATE MINECRAFT?" because you think minecraft is already so vastly unrealistic and that makes the game better (I.E., not having to take an hour to break through a 1mx1mx1m cube of dirt, but believe me, some realism helps. I'll keep this as vanilla as possible.
This idea includes 3 things, which don't all have to be added, but could instead be separate as they are all great stand alone ideas. This includes better physics for water (I know notch said no, but hear me out.), a solution for better rivers and waterfalls (I count this as water). Things no longer being able to float (no floating islands) and independant block entities.
Water would go like this:
I think I may have a simple solution, that is both easy to code and very "vanilla", and is in keeping with the people who like to use water as a conveyor belt.
First off, the basic water physics go like this: When water is on a flat surface, it flows normally. But if the water flows over an edge, the source block is moved to the next block the water flow collides with, or, if you will, the next floor the stream touches. This allows for 4x4 infinite water pools, water conveyors and all the benefits of having water that can flow and move.
As for the issue of waterfalls and rivers, I think I have a simple solution that requires 1 block to accomplish.
Introducing, the glacier block. It cannot be crafted, and is generated above a certain height in most biomes. it releases a steady stream of water, which then hit's the "ocean water".
Ocean water absorbs regular water that flows into it, and can create regular water. Ocean water isn't picked up, but when you use a bucket on it, it gives you regular water. It also flows MUCH further, providing greater flooding capabilities as it can form water source blocks with blocks further away from it. This means it will have a tough time flooding your caverns, but will fill in tnt craters nicely.
Block Physics
I know some of you are upset by this idea, and very understandably. I love my floating castles. But with this system, you wont have to give that up.
Click that link, and watch some King Arthur's Gold videos, or download the game. It demonstrates what I'm going for PERFECTLY. In it, you can build blocks up until you hit the top of the map, but you can only build so far in one direction without a pillar (a block support going down directly to the ground) before the blocks just don't connect anymore. This is a little tough on builders, until you realize that you can take all but one of the supports away without the structure falling. I also think it helps strategy in SMP, because it makes it so players cant just build a "sky bridge" into the enemy base.
This also means no flying islands, like in the confirmed "dream world". This can be fixed by making it so every island generates with some kind of ore or block that acts like a piece of land, allowing everything to hang off of it and float. It is VERY rare, and removing it can cause the sky island to fall. This can also be mined and moved to the real world, where you'd make supportless flying bases with it. Removing it will cause catastrophic failure :smile.gif:
Independent block entities
I don't know if this has been suggested before, but I really think it could change the way the game is played, allowing pistons to push large, multiblock entities. These entities would be constructed by the player by taking blocks, somehow crafting them into the entity version of itself and then sticking them together. This makes it so the player could craft push able cannons, boats, blast doors, airships, (slowly) moving forts, and anything they can think of.
A few new blocks could be required for some, to make it fair. For instance, smelt able buckets of water that produce steam (upside down water, with the exaxt same effects) that pushes up on entities it touches, allowing for air ships that only move as fast as you can supply them with fuel and as slow as they are big. Using wind for direction is a cool idea, but challenging to implement, even just as a thought. If anyone can think how to do this, post your idea and I'll quote you. Another thing that could be added is gears that act like water wheels that can be powered to push boats, not powered to produce power or powered to push land vehicles along. Perhaps soul sand grabs the earth and some combination of that and a sticky piston does it..
Post what you think! Comment if you like!! Don't dismiss them all if you don't like one.
Sure!. It is fine for me, as long as you guys don't come out with the idea of implementing realistic 3D models instead of minecraft's beautiful blocky graphics...
BTW, this is a nice effort, and a well-written post... I appreciate the lack of DERPiness in your spelling...
Literally anyone can feel free to look at this. It isn't a crime. Is the name boring? Crap. Well, I hope maybe someone will see it has a comment and think "Hmm, maybe this isn't a load of crap."
Posted this before your reply xD And thank you. I only had that snide first comment because I dislike people shooting down an idea because of one point. I've seen it to often.
Okay, sure. This would all be fine to have in the game, however, why not have them as mods?
Notch has plans for a modding API, and this could be coded with inspiration, or even using the coding, from existing mods.
Have a look at Finite Water, and similar mods. Mods won't be hard to install from the moment he releases this API, it will all either be done from within the game, or with an external client, Curse style. This doesn't need to be in the real game, as it will only cause more disparity between casual and hardcore player.
If it's a mod, players can choose to have it or not. If it's popular/good enough, Notch might even add a setting for it in game. However, it's highly likely Notch will not change his current water system. It works well, and efficiently without putting too much strain on the server. I like your idea, but it would be better off as a mod.
You people really need to drop the whole reality thing lol
MC was never advertised as a game that follows the laws of physics.
Enjoy it for what it is and stop requesting things like this that would just ruin it for people like me =/

I see your point. I posted this in mods. But the point of this is that finite water, while good, breaks the game for some people. And ALL the suggestions could be mods instead.

EDIT: I kinda like the block entities bit tho lol
How would it ruin it? Please, tell me. What part? Not all three have to be added. Vote for your favorite.
The water would work the exact same way, except for elevators, which it doesn't work for now anyway. There are ways to get past the block physics, and you said you liked the third idea. I hate when people say "This will ruin the way I play minecraft" when it will probably just change the way they play a little. And after all, isn't that what you'd want? Wolves didn't change a thing, so now there's better than wolves.
