Adventure maps are some of the most fun parts of the game in my opinion. I think these ideas will greatly improve the maps.
Adventure Button.
So I was thinking that the data could be fed from Minecraft forums, but I think it would be a little bit better if Mojang made there own database.
Basically, on the minecraft home screen there would be a button saying
"Adventure."
When clicked it would take you to an interface where you would chose from different items from the database. The list would display a screenshot provided by the submiter. Next to that you would have the title, the author, the genre[adventure, puzzle ect.]. Clicking it would take you to the spawn point, and you could play the map.
Pressing the escape key would take you to an interface nothing like the current one.
You would have a few options.
Back to game.
Save. Save the current location.(automatically happens also).
Reload map. This would reload the map to the original form.
Quit. Quits without saving
At the very top of the adventure interface would be a button with the text "Saved Maps.". It would take you to the same sorta interface(How many times can you say interface) as you get when
you push single player.
New Blocks.
Note: Even though you can create&place these blocks in survival, these blocks do not have any functionality.
1. Check point block.
One of the best tall tale features of a good map is check points. Unfortunately, it can take a significant amount of time to make a system that not only works, but is easy for the user to use. As a result of the this, many map makers are not willing to invest the time to create one. So, I propose the checkpoint block.
Basically, when red stone hits a checkpoint block it will be available in the checkpoint menu that you can view when you right click a checkpoint block. When you place the block in survival you can enter the in the title of the checkpoint. As long as redstone is hitting the block it will be available in the menu. When double clicked you will be taken to that checkpoint.
The checkpoints would appear in chronological order based on when the redstone hit the block. The checkpoint that you right clicked to get the menu would be greyed out.
The recipe would be: (:RFlower: = Redstone)
The block would look like a plank but with a check mark on each side.
2. Story Block
It takes a while to create longer passages to with signs and it can be annoying for the user to constantly navigate out of to read Note_04.txt. So I propose that we had a block that you could right click and view a unlimited document full of text(scrolling box obviously).
The box would look like wooden planks but with the image for the book on each side.
The recipe would be: = book. I could not find book, but Im sure its there though.
When right clicked in survival, a screens shows up so you can chose a text document from your drive. This .txt doc would be copyed over into the world folder.
Defining information
I was thinking of an XML based system for defining the information. The cool thing about it is that people can define very specific rules, like what blocks can be destroyed. Obviously, it would be simpler if someone could create a simple form for defining what you want, but this will store the information.
I have included a little documentation on how it would work if you want to read it. But I put it in the spoiler tags in case you do not want to read it.
The parent tag would be <minecraft_map> <rules> would define all of the different rules. <destroy_block> would have the data values of which blocks can be destroyed, separated with comma. <drop_block> would have false if when blocks are destroyed get no item dropped. If the map maker wants specific blocks to drop something the map maker can put data values separated with a comma.
Get the jest of it? I will contune at a later time if people want.
This would be great for SMP, too.
Story block would be great for spawn, or custom maps.
Checkpoint block would be great for obsticle courses. I've seen entire servers built just for their obsticle course... and it was epic.
