There's one kind of suggestion I really hate: the kind of suggestion that essentially suggests a completely different game with totally different programming. It's pretty silly to suggest something that would require the developers to totally ignore the real game for a while to focus on something else.
Well, I'm going to break that rule since I think this idea is pretty cool. But I don't expect it to ever make it in the game, it's more like wishful thinking. Here is my least realistic and practical suggestion ever:
The Two Dimensional World
Imagine if there was a portal to a 2D world. Basically you'd leave the 3D first person world of Minecraft and cross over into a 2D third person platformer.
This world would be very similar to Minecraft, besides being flat. It would still have gravity. It would still have blocks (except in 2D land they'd just be squares). Every block placeable in 3D minecraft would be placeable there as a 2D square. And 2D squares mined there could be brought back to the 3D world and placed as 3D blocks. Like the nether, you'd be able to build portals to travel between regular 3D earth and this 2D land.
Pretty much everything you can build in 3D minecraft you could build there. You could still place minecart rail, redstone, switches, torches, pistons, note blocks, chests, plants, water and lava flows, etc. You'd still use your pickaxe, axe, shovel, hoe, etc. It'd just all be 2D in that dimension. You wouldn't need seperate 2D items, just everything brought there would become 2D. Everything brought back would become 3D.
Why would you want to leave the 3D world of Minecraft for this 2D world? Well, it would let people build classic platformer and 2D sidescrollers. You could for make a level where pistons slowly release lava, forcing the player to outrun death. It would also be fun to design 2 dimensional buildings. No, not as fun as designing 3D buildings, but variety is the spice of life. I'd like to do both.
Yes, I admit I kind of got the idea from Terrarria which has been described as Minecraft in 2D. Except Terrarria has a heavier focus on exploration and combat than building. The 2D world on the other hand would actually be Minecraft in 2D, with the same toolset of blocks and redstone to build with, and the focus would remain on construction and level design.
So yes, this is pretty much a different game. It'd have to be programmed from scratch. However it would be much easier to create than 3D Minecraft was since it's the same thing in 2D. It's not impossible. There's just no way in hell Notch is going to drop working on the fancier higher tech 3D minecraft to include a 2D world. But maybe if it was added as a mod...
Anyway, that's my highly unrealistic unlikely to ever see the light of day suggestion. Hope you enjoyed it.
NO. Don't click New Thread. Read the rules. I don't give a damn how long or boring they are. If you do not, you will be subject to massive flaming and criticism by yours truly.
So basically what you're saying is you want a portal that lets you walk from Minecraft to Terraria?
Well, Terrarria but without the flying eyeball monsters and spells. And with the same minecart rail, redstone wire/switches/torches, water/lava physics, that we have in Minecraft.
Basically, everything that exists in Minecraft but in a 2D world.

I don't hate the idea. I like it. I just think it's highly unrealistic from a "what will Notch actually work on" perspective.
Although there are many games that switch between 2D and 3D. So it's not totally ridiculous. I only think that Mojang would prefer to improve the core 3D game rather than add a separate 2D sandbox to play in.
actually it'll have some applications (or more correctly exploilts)
If the ore distribution % does not change, it will mean diamonds will become easier to be found, since you have one less dimension to explore.
So minecrafters can simply get diamonds from there, and transfer them to the 3D world
As for the issue of being able to see everything at once on a 2D screen, this can be fixed by lighting engine (anything not exposed will be pitch black)
Since when does teleporting to a 2D world make sense in Minecraft!?! It DOESN'T! Why on earth would Notch waste his time practically re-programming the game just to create another useless realm!?! I can understand the nether, I can understand the aether, but a 2D realm!?!
No.

At a loss for words? Here's a few you can use: Welcome, to Night Vale...

Well, as a separate plane there may not be many resources (like the nether) or there could be different resources there. So it may not really be ideal for mining, or maybe you just wouldn't look for the same stuff there.
The real reason to go there though would be to build things in 2D. You could construct a sidescrolling adventure game where pistons timed with repeaters release lava in sequence, forcing the player to outrun a wall of death. Or if mobs still spawn in darkness, you could leave dark areas in the map to spawn enemies to create an old school Mario Bros. type of game.
And good call about the lighting. You'd still need light to see.

It's not an optical illusion, it just looks like one.
