Really, the game doesn't need more things like wolves, and pistons. What Minecraft could really use is a stable way to load mods. No matter how much work and effort Notch and Mojang put into Minecraft, they will always be 20 steps behind what the community can come up with. It's just not possible for them to keep adding everything that people want. Instead what Mojang should be focusing on is making the game more accessible to the modding community without breaking the game every time they roll out a new patch. Mods like Mo' Creatures have no changes to the minecraft.jar file, but requires a mod loader to work. So why can't Minecraft come with its own internal mod loader that can load Mo' Creatures? Done correctly this can save both the modding community and the company itself time when coming up with new ideas and projects. Recipes, creatures, new blocks, could be a breeze to add if your only having to code a generalized set of functions for its new features then roll it into a mod box and send it out.
I know some things just can't be done without editing the minecraft.jar file. But it should be a main focus to try to eliminate as many things as possible to build a more stable core for the game. Eventually the community won't have the ability to maintain these mods. If the original creator decides tomorrow they don't feel like coding for the new update, that's it the mods gone. Why put everyone through this revolving door of updating mods when steps can be taken to reduce the headache and smooth patching transition.
In the end the game community could create the games content itself. Basically Mojang could fade into the black and offer custom made mod packs for a price to bring in revenue.
All and all it's just my two cents. Take them with a grain of salt. Really I just feel Minecraft is limiting itself by not supporting and uplifting its modding community. Every time a new update comes by suddenly the world ends and we're all forced back to vanilla Minecraft until the creator finally finds time to update their own mods to suit the whims of Mojang.
Edit: Just so its clear since in the last 5 minutes I've seen 2 posts saying this. I'm not suggesting to stop bug fixes, not at all. I'm saying stop adding entirely new things until a solid modding backbone is done.
My Idea is that under "Mods & Texture Packs" there is a little mod "store".
Each mod has a little button that you click on that will download it.
When it's downloaded, it will assign the blocks/items/entities a vacant id,
and you have the content.
I'm not saying stop updating, I'm saying stop adding new little bits and bobs until a more stable back bone for modding is done then go hog wild with everything they always wanted. Focus efforts into bug fixes, and getting the modding loader, but by the sounds of it 1.8 they would be doing just that.
Mod support is coming to 1.8 , but you are right , sometime si dont install a mod i want soo bad because i have problem installing it , sometimes i do it but sometimes its jut too confusing , i normally dont install mods for nothing , but minecraft its just too cool.
Also , notch should keep updating , even if he doesnt makes new things he needs to clean the game , i mean solving bugs , that is something modders can do but they dont , thats why notch is needed , i think the game in objects is ready for a final release , but without bug solving the game would be... mmm..... like Duke Nukem Mirror effect.
I agree completely. Edit: just said the same thing as the above guy lol
Pistons actually are a little update compared to some of the mods out there. Take the better than wolves mod for example, it adds over 2 dozen new items to the game and a unique energy system.
Notch and Jeb should never ever have any fun. They should be chained to their desks and be forced to only ever do boring stuff like bug fixing and modding support.
Seriously, the reason Mojang does little bits and bobs is because they enjoy those sorts of things. I'm pretty sure that's the same reason why any modder makes his or her own mods. Making support stuff is not as much fun.
Without wolves and pistons, Notch and Jeb would have simply lost interest in the game by now.

It's a headache having to wait for all these people to update their mods.

Bukkit's not outdated anymore, and neither are most plugins.
