Instead of ores being random I think they should be in specific areas. Some areas would have plenty of coal but not many other ores. Other areas could mostly have iron, or mostly have gold. Some areas would be very bad for mining. This way you would need multiple mines, and it would be easier to find the type of ore you want instead of finding a bunch of random ores. It would add more exploration to the game and the need for multiple mines. To keep the game balanced diamond ore would stay the same as it is now.
that would sorta destroy the whole element of surprise...the exploration of caves and cave systems is the fun part of minecraft :smile.gif:. having to search for that one diamond block, and finally finding it, gives you a lot more satisfaction then finding a whole cave of it ;p
Well, there is the "Realistic Ores" mod out there, that kinda does this, i.e make ores(coal, iron, gold, redstone) spawn rarer, but you find a LOTTTT of them. Not sure if it's updated to 1.7 yet, though.

Diamonds would still spawn randomly like they do now. The other ores like iron and coal aren't that hard to find anyway.

My suggestion is basically to have biomes be larger (Who hasn't spawned a world and come across a 'desert' 50 meters wide or something similar?). Each biome would have certain... advantages and disadvantages. For instance, certain mobs would only spawn in certain biomes (Notch already did this with wolves). New biome-specific mobs could be introduced (Scorpions in the desert, bears in the forest, etc). Plants would grow differently (if at all) in biomes they are not native to (does it make sense to plop a sand block in the middle of a snowy tundra and grow a cactus on it? No. And trees don't grow that well in the sandy desert. Etc.)
And (more to your point) each biome would have a different distribution of ores. Perhaps deserts would have more redstone under them, while tundra has more coal, and forest has more iron. This would not be practical to code or use, if the current biome size was kept- the biomes are too small and close together!
I like this. I mean you will still need to explore the lands and make test mines to see what kind of ore the chunk you are currently in holds.
But a problem that I see is that this will involve a lot of traveling back and forth, so this might work better in multiplayer where the players would spawn in different parts of the world and then meet up somewhere in the middle for trading away their local ore for other stuff.
But in singleplayer this might get old quickly if you have to spend a lot of time walking waste distances.

The ores already spawn more commonly at certain levels so I don't see why they can't be set to spawn more commonly at certain areas.

See my suggestion for Bigger Better Biomes.

Typing anything with "ores" in it will bring up half the forum.
