Since minecraft is un-high-tec ,Iv tough about low technology elevator.
The idea is simple:
-Use Coal as energy resource to get up.
-Gravity to get down.
The iron ladder:
We need a good road to the elevator, it wont get up by herself that way,
So the ability to put minecart tracks on walls will help us.
The tracks will be the path of the elevator.
The elevator:
The elevator is a small iron plate with wooden fence on it.
How does the elevator work?
-You put rails on the wall.
-You craft the elevator and place it on the rail and it will automaticly fall down to the last rail.
-Using coal will start to rise the elevator up.
-You can take a sit like in minecrat and enjoy your ride.

Personally I like the how the better than wolf mod did the elevator. But this is also pretty good the only problem I have seen and thought of with the elevator is that when it gets to the top it will ether suffocate you or fall off the track.
I think there needs to be some kind of vertical chain system. Like Minecart rails, but for walls. That way it will only go as high as the amount of chain you make.

Chains and wheels would work too.
But its a bigger addition to the game than just making few changes with tracks.

The elevator will stop in the end.
Chains and wheels would work too.
