I do enjoy the concept of purely aesthetic items; however, I do also feel that items require some use to merit gamewise inclusion.
I feel, additionally, that the palette Notch has set is far too... limiting? and would like to see an increase in the size of the bitmap he uses to reference all blocks.
That is a bit of an aside.
Toward the concept, I personally agree; though I can understand where others may not.
They need some kind of use. Notch shouldn't be wasting his time on completely aesthetics.

but why not make some useless things, like golden beds, or stone pictures.
they really have no other use but to look pretty, so here is my list of suggestions.

-obsidian
-golden
-diamond
-iron
-paintings that are:
-stone
-iron
-redstone (for a flashy effect)
-doors that are:
-diamond
-golden
-iron
-lapiz lazuli
-glowstone torches
-lapiz lazuli torches
-dye for pigs
-dye for cows
-Ornamental tools made out of lapiz lazuli and gold (placeable)
-shelf (already made by a mod, but worth mentioning anyways)
-Furnaces that are:
-iron
-gold
-diamond
-crafting benches that are:
-mahogany style
-elm style
-birch style
-teak style
-willow style
-oak style
-petrified wood style
-half blocks that are made of:
-lapiz lazuli
-diamond
-glass
-Iron
-slime block
-fishing rods that are:
-iron
-gold
-diamond
-redstone powered (flashy effect)

-Bookcases that are:
