@AgentRenamon: Having multiple versions give it more options I guess, but it also adds complexity to the series of blocks, possibly too much. I think having 2 versions of the eye block should be the maximum (like how there's 2 types of doors, 2 pressure plates, etc).
I've been wanting something like this ever since I became a redstone nerd (months ago). 100% for it. But one thing you should add to OP: When you set it, its range is set (max of 16 like you said), limited to the closest block in its line of sight, and if the line of sight changes then the redstone is triggered. Or don't add it, whatever.

I realized I was god when I tried praying and found I was talking to myself.
yes to all comments and yes to the eye. umm but we could make it so we could change it's distance like a switch. sort of like a repeater
starts and 1 or 16 but here's what the distances could be. 1-4-8-16. just multiples of 4. so the eye in a adventure map could be zelda style.
i could imagine a sensor going off and a set of note blocks go off. being an alarm system and just looping.

I approve of your imagination Ever Free Forest The clouds move... all on their own
Look, I voted no, and here is why. If you have one, you can stick it outside your door, and , bam, you are TOO SAFE! The fun of minecraft is having creepers creep, not you creeping up on them! C'mon, man! I like having baddies jumping me. It's fun! It gives me a chance to take out my legilimently mined diamond sword, and strike. That is my opinion. I am not trolling you. I am giving you helpful advise. So I say no.
Pressure plates destroy the purpose of this block...
Of course it does. Because we all know pressure plates can be well hidden, detect more than just the block next to it, and can up intricate tripwire systems with ease. Oh wait...
You're just wrong.

How does the eye block make it any easier to make traps? As of now hostile mobs can't detect pressure plates. The eye block is designed against people when talking about traps (and can be used for other non-trap things as well).
I like it!Maybe you should be able to somehow change the distance it detects, maybe by right clicking? And it would be good to include an under-used material in crafting it, like gold, or lapis lazuli or something
Added the distance-changing to the OP. Also, I've considered the possibility of the eye block to use Glowstone Dust in its crafting recipe, which is an under-used material.
You invade this world claiming it as your own simply by your presence.
You slaughter animals for their hides and flesh.
You destroy the landscape and gouge out the earth to build your monuments to vanity.
And yet you call me monster.

Then, what? One Eye for Mobs/ Players, and a second for whatever else? If that's what you mean, the one using iron (my opinion) would be for Mobs/Player, and the one using stone could be for everything else. The glass, BTW, is the sensor "eye" that stares straight ahead, while the redstone represents the internal wiring needed for it to work.
I like this idea a lot, though I think it would be better called a sensor.
There are more than just aesthetic reasons for implementing sensors. For instance, they could be activated by falling past them, whereas pressure plates only work on the ground. This would enable some very interesting traps and mechanisms.
Used in conjunction with pistons you could create safe open viewing areas (when you fall past a sensor, it activates a piston that puts a block beneath you so you don't fall far enough to take damage), and hidden pits (when a mob or player trips the sensor the ground beneath is retracted and they fall to their death).
The automatic distance setting is pretty good. It would also be great to reset the sensor block by right-clicking it.

Well, if it was made of over-priced materials, people wouldn't want to use them as often because they would be stolen or blown up in a TNT trap.
