Alright, when I think of an idea, I sit down and think "What is Minecraft missing?", when all of a sudden, it hit me.
Minecraft needs insects! Some harmful ones, some helpful ones, some ones that hardly do anything at all! So without further adieu, here they are.
Fireflies
Small creatures about the size of the default character's pupil, they gather around flowing water and grass, and spawn at nighttime. They emit a light source of 4 in a soothing, glowing fashion. If enough fireflies are in one area, they will form into a block called a Firefly Swarm which emits a light of 6 and can be gathered in a jar for a holdable light source. (Yes, I said a holdable light source, remember the mod that made that happen, though!)
Giant Bees
These are not your ordinary garden variety bumblebees, these are territorial, hive minded, giant bees. These bees come in semi-rare mini biomes called Hive Biomes and are in five different varieties. There are at least 50 bees per hive and more bees may spawn if the hive gets larger. (We'll get to that.)
Worker Bee
Small, weak and passive, these bees will fly around and look for flowers, they drop Pollen (Which can be crafted into Honey, but we'll get to that later.) when killed and they are about the size of the default player's head.
They have 5 health but they are as fast as a spider.
Guardian Bee
These are a little larger than a worker bee and have a dangerous stinger on them. These bees are territorial and will attack if you get within two blocks of their hive, or if you attack any of the other types of bees. They follow Worker Bee groups to the flower patches and there is always some guarding their queen. They have eight hearts of health and drop their stinger if killed.
Nester Bees
These bees are worker bees that always stay in the hive, they fly around Honeycomb blocks and watch over Larva. They have a green band along their abdomen instead of the traditional yellow and black of the Worker and Guardian bees. Though neutral, these bees have a special sting that stuns the player for three seconds, the player can still attack, they just can't move. They have six hearts of health and drop Honeycomb if killed.
Queen Bee
The big mother of the hive, this bee is a little larger than a Spider and is completely passive, but her guards aren't. If you get within 10 blocks of a queen, every guard bee in that room will move to attack you. She spawns Larvae every 20 seconds, which are carried out of the room by Nester Bees. The queen bee drops two Pure Honey and two Insect Lenses when killed, she has 20 hearts of health and continuously has guard bees in her room.
Larvae
Small, maggoty creatures around the same size of Fireflies, if left alone near a Honeycomb block for a day/night cycle, they will become either a Worker, Nester or a Guardian Bee. They drop nothing when killed and have two hearts of health.
Blocks of The Hive
The Hive has four blocks that form it, but if you break a block of The Hive without killing the Queen Bee, Guardian Bees will fly out and attack you. The Hive will expand after a day cycle of it's generation, but the expansion has a maximum limit. Every time The Hive expands, 10 more bees can spawn in it. Normal mobs do not spawn in The Hive, even if conditions are met perfectly.
Wax
Looks a bit like a mix between sand and smooth stone, it can be broken by hand and makes up most of The Hive, forming it's outer shell and most of the inner form. Can be made into Malleable Wax in a Furnace and then can be made into Candles.
Honeycomb
This is the "Nesting Block" of the Hive, it grows in formations on the Hive walls and can be broken with a stone axe or better. Can be broken by placing it in any crafting grid, which will give you Honeycomb Pieces. Sometimes will drop a Larva mob instead of a honeycomb block.
Honey
Yes, it's Honey, a liquid that will be formed in Honeycomb formations occasionally, it gives off a light level of 5 and is extremely common in The Queen's Chamber, you cannot fight a current of Honey, but you can swim up. It can be collected in a Jar and can be drank for 4 hearts healed. If you steal Honey from a hive with Guardian Bees nearby, they will attack you. It can be crafted with just about any food item to make a Sweetened version of it, which heals for 2 1/2 more hunger than whatever it was crafted into. It can also be made into a special type of explosive called a Honey Bomb, which causes all mobs in the explosion range to be covered in honey, slowing them greatly, honey bombs do not cause damage or destroy blocks, they only slow an enemy down.
Glowbead
This is a lot like Glowstone in appearance, except it grows in orb formations on the ceilings and upper walls of a Hive. It can be broken for 1-4 Glowbead Fragments, which can be crafted with three more Fragments to make two Glowbead Blocks. It gives off a light level of 14 and will hurt for 1 heart on contact with it. The Queen's Chamber has Glowbead in a web fashion on the ceiling of it.
Crafting Recipes
Candle
Where is Malleable Wax
Candles can only be placed on the ground, but they have the same brightness as Glowstone and are a holdable light.
Sweetened Food
Where is any type of food. (Or a bone)
Where is Jarred Honey
Sweetened Food heals for more health than the original food, as in a raw porkchop heals for 1.5 hunger, right? Well when sweetened, it will heal for 3.5 hunger. Now about Sweetened Bones, they give a 75% chance of taming a wolf, but it cannot be used for Bonemeal.
Honey Bomb
Where is Jarred Honey
Where is Clay Ball
Honey Bombs can be thrown at enemies, and will explode on impact. They do 2 hearts of damage and make the enemy "Sticky", which slows them down for 10 seconds.
Honey
Where is Pollen
Where is an Empty Jar
Honey is used in recipes, and of course can be eaten to heal 1 hunger bar.
Stinger Sword
Where is a stinger.
Stinger Sword has the strength of an Iron Sword and the durability of Stone, but this sword has a special effect. If you hit an enemy with it, there is a 1:10 chance that the mob will become stunned for three seconds, much like the Nester Bee's special stinger and making it invaluable for surprise close encounters, as well as PVP. The stinger sword does 2 more hearts of damage against insects, which makes it useful for fighting in The Hive.
Pure Honey
Pure Honey is a drop of the Queen bee, it can be eaten just as is for 7 hearts, yes I said it HEALS, just like the old days. It can be used in the place of Honey in Honey Bombs to make a sticky effect of 10 blocks around the bomb, and a layer of honey on the ground that slows enemies as well, lasting for 5 minutes.
Bee Goggles
Where is Bug Lense
Made from Insect Lenses, these goggles let you travel Minecraft in style, looking like regular sunglasses on the outside, but having a whole other effect. Bees and moths will not attack you unless you attack them, and the screen is a darker hue than normal with them on.
Mainly the giant bees rely on swarming and absolute numbers to kill you, a bow and arrow fully charged is a good weapon to pick them off from a range, though a diamond sword would be effective as well.
Moths
Yes, moths, attracted to light, cloth eating, thorn in your side, moths. But these moths are different, yes, they still will eat wool blocks and are attracted to light, but they come in three different types now. Did I mention they're about the size of the player's head?
Plain Moth
Regular moth, these fly around, eat Wool blocks, stay near light sources and only spawn during the night. They have 5 hearts of health and are completely passive, dropping 0-2 Moth Powder when killed. Moth Powder makes them less of an annoyance because it can be crafted into Flight Boots.
Cremoth
A larger than normal moth, it's appearance is that of a greener, slightly larger moth, except for the camouflage pattern on it's wings. They glow slightly with a light level of 3 and when approached, they raise their wings and make a hissing noise, slowly backing away from you. If you try to attack them or get too close, they will run after you and explode, much like a Creeper. They have 8 hearts of health and drop 0-3 Moth Powder or Gunpowder.
Giant Moth
The giant of the giants, these moths are not attracted to light and are the size of a Spider, they are aggressive and will fly to get to you, doing 3 damage per hit. They are a rare monster, about a little more common then a Slime. If you manage to kill one, which is hard since they have 15 hearts of health, you get 0-5 Moth Powder and 2 Moth Wings.
Crafting Recipes
Flight Boots
Where is Moth Wing
Where is Moth Powder
Where is any type of boots
Flight Boots are an interesting thing, with the fact that they allow flight at the cost of durability of whatever boots you put in. Flight Boots have half the durability of what type of boots you put in, and that durability is drained 2 per second of flight. The flight animation looks like a cloud underneath the player, fading in and out
Nettles
Nettles are a type of plant that causes irritation to the skin in real life, but in Minecraft it is a plant that grows up to 2 blocks tall and will harm you for 1 damage per second for 5 seconds after you touch it.
Much like Fire damage, Nettles do show a specific animation for being "Poisoned", which is that your character gets a greenish tint to them and their screen has that same tint, just enough to be noticeable, but not enough to be blocking your view.
Nettles can be crafted into Nettle Tea, which will clear any over time effects on you (As in fire, nettle or Nester Bee Sting.) and heal you for 2 hunger.
If you attempt to collect Nettle by hand, you will get the Nettle Damage effect on you, you need to use any tool to collect it.
To make Nettle Tea, you need to first boil water with a Furnace and a Water Bucket, then you need to craft a bottle with the Boiled Water and you will get Boiling Water Bottle. Then you combine 2 Nettle with the Boiling Water Bottles and acquire Nettle Tea.

10/10 suggestion! Finally, something practical in minecraft! I have been wanting more items and mobs for a long time and this checks that off the list.
Although, I think the standard moth should be smaller, like a quarter of the player's head, and the nettles should turn you green to show you were poisoned (another possible cure could be sleep?)

Hmm, that is a pretty good idea, but I think I'll keep the moths the size they are now.
we dont need more healing items in minecraft. pork is good enough. the bee hive idea, although good, would be too hard to impliment and would cause a lot of lag. i like the fireflies idea and notch said there would be a new light engin, wether that means moving light or not i dont know, but maybe the jar would work. otherwise you couldplace it like a glowstone block and can only pick it with your hands or it would break

Yes, but I feel that Minecraft is too boring in it's "variety" of healing, you kill a pig, eat pork, THAT'S IT. Honey is much more of a challenge to get, which makes it more fun! As for Nettle Tea, that's not only a healing item, it's a REMEDY item, which makes it infinitely valuable for players with low health that are on fire.
Come on, is anybody going to like this besides one person?
Terribly sorry, but I don't see a purpose for anything under candle (other than honey of course, honey bomb seems excessive) But I quite would like to have to fight through a hive, it could be a nice above ground adventure.
