hatches most obvious use is as a trapdoor, and in SMP that use is severely nerfed by having them sit at the bottom of the block where they are not level with the floor. The best way for hatches to sit is at the top of the block, be level with the floor, and open down.
this poses an issue with ladders, wherein the player can't climb out of a pit because of the lack of a ladder. to fix this an open hatch should function as a ladder to anyone who did not enter the block's space from the top.
thoughts, suggestions changes, problems, holiday ham(or 4th of July fireworks)?
i do agree that they should be moved to sit at the top of the block. you can still easily get out of a pit though, you just need to jump when you get to the top of the ladder so that isn't really a problem.
When have you ever seen a trapdoor that opens down?
Last time I checked, all trapdoors opened down. Hatches open up, and trapdoors open down.

If it were to be moved down, he would have to program a little extra so that you could walk through the trapdoor for a split second. Why? Because the only reason you fall no matter what right now is because the door goes up, and that causes the player to fall regardless of the hatch position because.... hmm wait I can't seem to explain it right. I'll try pictures.

This is a closed hatch. It is attached to the cobblestone and the hinge is colored bright green. If you were to hug the cobblestone, you would still fall because the hatch flips up and removes the space you were standing on, like this:
:blink.gif:
Then... if you move the hatch to the top...
:dry.gif:
If you hugged the cobblestone the hinges would save you because it would not move.

Does that make sense? :huh.gif:
It will still work.... :sleep.gif: (Dumb people I hate them)
while you stand on it and it goes down (assuming he will change it to go down and not up as it is now...)
when you right click it it chenges it self... (well switching it self I dont know how to explain it to you else)
and as long as you close enough to fall trugh it its enough time between the "switch" same goes to doors...

c fattie makes a valid point, but i don't think that turning the contact bubble off for a split second would take more than 5 lines of code if notch already has the appropriate methods in place; certainly less than checking whether the player entered from the top of the block or somewhere else.
