I really want to know how to make mods. Because of this I'm looking around to see if there are any guides to help me. From what I've seen, making mods is difficult. But let's face it; if it were easy, everyone would be doing it, and it wouldn't be as special.
But here's a question: Why are there no official guides on how to do this? I mean, on the main Minecraft.net website all you can really do is buy the game and other merchandise and customize your profile. So, why couldn't there be some room for official guides on the website? Sure, even with guides, it's difficult to make complex mods such as the Aether, Mo' Creatures, and Airplanes; but if there was something to really help us during the editing process, it could be possible for more people to do this. (It would be nice, though, if there was a more simplified way to make mods, but I guess you can't change that.)
Some people may think it's not good to make it so easy, or else there will be thousands of Minecraft mods. However, is that really a problem? Minecraft only has so much gameplay, so mods that could add more difficulty to the game, as well as new things to search for, could keep people wanting to come back for more adventure every day. Also, it would be kind of nice to see what people would come up with....
Anyways, let me know what you think, and hopefully there will be "How to Make Mods" guide in the near future. :smile.gif:
There's a slight problem with your suggestion. A guide for modding Minecraft specifically would be limited only to what is already in the game, which means you're very lacking in options. Go beyond that at all and you're simply asking for a guide to Java as a whole. There are TONS of those already out there, and you're going to have to read up on a lot of material to get anything out of it.
Modding even a simple block in Minecraft takes pages upon pages of tutorial. Trying to add completely new entities like planes and new mobs requires a know-how of Java that you're not going to get in a Minecraft guide.

I'm almost 100% positive that this have been suggested before but i'll suggest it again anyways
Never mind, I've found it. But, even with such a helpful guide, shouldn't there be an official one on the website? It would be much more helpful than needing to resort to the forums.
Nah, mojang doesn't need to bother making an "official" everything. These are already the official forums so people should know to come here for help.
Hmmm.... I see your point, Travesty. There must be some way around this......
There is. It's determination and patience. Quite simply, if you want to mod anything original into Minecraft you're going to need to learn Java.
Java is a language. If you know what all the keywords, symbols, and organization mean you can do whatever you want with it. Your best bet is to follow a few of the beginner tutorials such as THIS to get an idea of where Minecraft stores certain files and what sort of coding Notch uses. From there's you at least have a slightly better understanding of basic Java and can move forward from there. After that, just treat the internet as your own person Java textbook and teach yourself how to use the language.

Give me the link to the EASYEST Modding Tutorial please.
I believe the one Llama gave me up above is helpful, but as Travesty said, you need to learn how to use Java, and then learn how to make mods. But, I agree there should be an easier way...

Llama's link goes to the forum where you can find them all, and mine goes to the one that I believe is the most user-friendly. It's a bit of a read, but it tries to explain what every little part of the code means so that you aren't expected to assume anything.

I tried looking there already, but nothing really helped. Could you maybe direct me to a specific thread that would have the information I need?
Anything with the [Creating Mods] tag in the thread title should help.
Thanks! :smile.gif:
