Ah, who doesn't love a complex Redstone contraption? From subway systems to bank security, Redstone is there to open that door or send that minecart when you're not. But there is one downfall to Redstone: the current only travels 15 blocks. Obviously, Notch shouldn't get rid of it, or you'd eliminate the need for a repeater. But that simple three-button combination lock to my lapis lazuli is just too darn big! I have somewhat of a solution: corner repeaters. By crafting two repeaters like this:
Possibly, could be a slimeball instead of empty space, to make to reasons for the item, the other being sticky pistons. The idea is it would hold two repeaters together.
Where is a repeater. The recipe yields two repeaters, so nothing is lost. Corner repeaters turn to face existing redstone tracks, like tracks for minecarts. Instead of like this:

I was thinking that the slime would hold it together, but I think I like your idea more. :biggrin.gif: The recipe isn't important now, I want to try to flesh out the idea a little more before I start thinking about that.
