I come to you today with a (Hopefully) unique idea in which I could help build upon the exploration value of Minecraft, so please, make sure to read it all and give your feedback and further suggestions to help potentially improve this idea.
R.B.E. - Random. Boss. Encounter. System
Doesn't it excite you to see something that is both unique and rare, yet challenging? Hunting for diamonds is easily addicting, so I wanted to add some extra incentive to exploring and digging, or just simply being patient. The R.B.E. system will generate underground caverns with dangerous and unusual mobs that will pose a threat to the player that discovers them, giving the possibility of great rewards or even fame. I speak of things that only legends of foretold. Giant Slimes, monsters that are made of the toughest rock, or even behemoths that can set fire to entire villages.
Theoretically, such a system would be generated in the same manner that terrain is generated. You will either have to search for these monsters, or they might just possibly find you unexpectedly. So here's an idea of what I had in mind...
Rock Colossus - These elemental beings will tower at an estimated twelve blocks high and only appear in specially large caverns or alongside mountain ranges. They will appear as a pile of assorted stones, but when approached, they reveal themselves to have a some-what humanoid figure - A lot like Tardius from Metroid Prime.
Their standard attacks will include throwing chunks of stone at you that deal about three hearts each(non-armored). They'll poses some immunity to attacks from arrows, but will be weak against lava and metal/diamond weapons.
The Geist - These spiritual and haunted creatures will only appear in the nether. They're the collected spirits from creatures/humanoids that were defeated on the surface above, leaving their souls to forever wander and gather in the Nether. They'll hover around ground level on flat terrain inside the Nether, giving room for their attacks. As a whole, it can summon mostly any mob, including creepers and pigmen. Other attacks will include teleportation and fireballs that hold similarities with Ghast.
In combat, they'll summon other mobs to assist with defeating you along with a ranged attack and evasive maneuvers involving teleportation. Fireballs will deal 1 1/2 hearts(Non-armored) and mobs will deal twice the damage, so it will be important to focus on them. As you deplete its health, it will begin to split itself, increasing the amount of ranged attacks the Geist can fire at you. Weaknesses include most weaponry and this boss will only die when every last counterpart is completely eliminated.
Concept Art #1 -
Water Horror - This boss will obviously appear in oceanic parts of the map, generally wide open oceans. I guess I could supposedly call this guy the Kraken since it's a giant see monster with tentacles. A whirlpool will appear around this particular boss, applying force to everything moving inward towards it. Obviously, if you get too close, he will devour you and slowly eat away at your health, rendering you defenseless unless somebody quickly kills it.
General attacks include a whirlpool, extended arms that can attack you and destroy your boat and a water projectile that deals weak damage, but is fired with near rapid succession. Ranged attacks will be advised for this boss since any encounters at close range are fatal.
Rolling Thunder - This is a special event boss that will only appear very rarely during thunderstorms. Its presence will be betrayed by an increased rate in lightening strikes, and of course, its electrifying appearance. A fiend of this magnitude will surely be devastating to anyone that attacks it directly since it has a constantly has a circulating electricity. Its lethal abilities will increase whenever you're standing in water or wearing metal armor. Weapons such as diamond, stone, or even wood can only touch this boss since they're not conductors.
Being a fiend of lightening, it can send shock-waves of lightening in your direction, so jumping or using cover will be the only way to avoid this. Other attacks will include the use of lightening from the sky and its most lethal attack, power surge. Power surge will effect everything within a defined radius, possibly 12-20 blocks. It will signify this attack when lightening begins constantly striking it, this means it's building up power. After charge up, it will immediately release it, sending a fatal shock-wave towards everything in the effected area.
This is all for now, I'll post more tomorrow as ideas develop. Thanks for reading!

I Think minecraft needs bosses , but i dont think they should be totally random , probably some requirements should be met first.
probably for a boss to spawn the player should have bow and iron+ sword.
or iron+sword and leather+ armor , and then the boss will have a chance to spawn.
It would be weird if you just spawned and start doing normal stuff , mining , etc. and you find a boss and you only have a wood pickaxe and sword...
I dont like the idea , but i dont hate it , so... why not...
@Villanelo - I like the idea of tiers in relation to the rarity and danger of the mob.
I was considering this -
Tier 1 - All of your regular mobs
Tier 2 - Much rarer spawns that slightly dwarf the Tier 1 catagory
Tier 3 - Boss monsters(Alphas) that much resemble their Tier 1 and 2 categories
Tier 4 - Special event monsters that only appear with certain circumstances, posing a great threat
I'll work with this idea for now since it does need more organization and practicality.
