This idea should have been put in Minecraft in Alpha!
It seems like a basic necessity.
it can be used to create wallpaper, and statues, and custom jack'o'lanterns.
Well, its called an art table, and it would be placed next to a furnace and workbench.
Made like this:
When it is "right clicked on" the same thing comes up as a crafting table, except bigger, and instead of a 3x3 box, there is a grid that is 16x16, with a 1x1 box on its left. To the right of the grid, there are 3 buttons, to select which tool to use.
The first is the standard "move icon" that is used on windows and mac, when dragging a picture, and so one.
The second is the Chisel tool. basically, its just a chisel.
The third is a paintbrush.
I will explain how each of these works in turn, after i explain the basics of the art table.
A block, (for example here, we will use a natural stone block) is placed in the 1x1 block to the left of the grid. Then the front of the block appears in the 16x16 grid. now, we all know that the texture of Minecraft blocks is made up of 256 pixels, or 16 pixels by 16 pixels) so the art appears in the 16x16 grid, with 1 pixel in each box of the grid.
When the player has finished editing the block, he takes it back out of the 1x1 box to the left of the grid, and places it in his inventory. If he clicks escape, then the edited block falls to the ground in forn of him, just like with the crafting table.
The move tool is used to determine which side of the block is showing, to be edited by the chisel or the paintbrush.
The Chisel is used by clicking on one of the grid squares. The art in that square is removed. If it is the edge of our natural stone, then that edge becomes invisible,(see through when placed back on the ground, part of the block has been dented, or removed. If one of the middle pieces is removed, then the pixel that was selected becomes a little bit darker, because of the shadow of the rock above it. If the same block is selected again, it goes darker still, as more rock is blocking the light. Eventually, it will become black.
The chisel could also be used to hollow out jack'o'lanterns by yourself, (e.g just normal pumpkins are found in the wild, then you create your own face on it)
If the chisel user messes up his creation (misclicks or something it is considered a mistake, and it cannot be undone, just like in real life. They will have to throw out that block, and start on a different one. (though the incorporation of glue could fix this, maybe there could als be a glue tool on the art table, but you would need the right amount of glue to use it... glue could be made out of clay and water)
With the inclusion of the chisel tool, statues could be made, (since we are using natural stone, we can have a natural stone statue.) The user just creates 10 or so blocks of natural stone, and edits each one in turn, then places the blocks on top and next to each other to create the statue. of course chiseled blocks will not be stackable, as they will all be different.
The chisel tool will make it possible to have a round head on your statue, even with a nose, eyes and real features, such as arms, and clothes all over the body and so on.
(I'm sorry about that, its really hard to explain in words, without a picture, so i hope you get what i mean)
The paintbrush needs paint in the inventory to operate.
Paint is made with a bucket of water, and a dye of your choice. (paint can also be used to paint walls, just right click on a block, and the block, and all the blocks adjacent to it [including diagonally] are coloured in that colour)
To use the paintbrush, select the block you wish to paint, then click on the paintbrush icon to the right of the grid, and then click on the paint colour that you will use.
then click on the pixel (one of the 16x16 pixels) and it will turn that colour. every time you dip your paintbrush in paint, you can colour 100 pixels, or if you dont want to colour that many, just wash your brush in water, and choose a new colour.
Wallpaper/ carpet can be created by painting paper, then placing the painted paper in your inventory, and right clicking on a block, placing the design on that face of the block, and the parallel faces to all blocks adjacent to it. (including diagonals)
Thankyou for your time, I hope Notch incorporates this into Minecraft, because we all know Minecraft will be a better place for everyone if this is included.
This is WAY to complicated. Art needs to be simple, but full of uses. This could be used in many ways, but it is way too complicated and we're better off just with the 8th blocks for sculpting.
