With the introduction of pistons into minecraft, and all the amazing things you can do with them, I got thinking. There's tons of things pistons could be used for, but the wiring of really advanced stuff like elevators (I'm hoping pistons can be placed on top of, and raised by other pistons) would require complex redstone wiring. That's why I suggest that the gear be reimplemented with a new purpose.
For one, gears could function as they did before, solely as an aesthetic. But there real value would be in combining multiple gears into a gear box block. These blocks would act as activators for redstone circuits. Here's what I mean:
Say you have multiple pistons stacked on top of each other. You want them to all raise or lower in unison.( = piston)
Instead of having to lay down complex and messy redstone circuits, you could simply use a gear box. ( = Gear box)( = redstone)
When the redstone carries power to the bottom gearbox, it activates all mechanisms (In this case pistons) connected to it. It also activates all gear boxes connected to it, which in turn activate all mechanisms and gear boxes they are connected to.
This would make redstone wiring much easier and neater than it currently is. Here's how the recipes would look: ( = gear)
This would be the recipe for gears. It would yield either 2 or 4 gears. With gears you could then craft a gear box block:
And that's all there is too it! Let me know what you think, and if you can think of any other uses that a gear box could have.

This would be very useful for piston creations. Perhaps pistons could be made with gear blocks rather than iron in the middle? Gears or gear blocks would make more sense.
