Hello attendees of the Suggestions forums, and welcome to my latest brain fart idea, the artificial sun!
Have you ever built magnificent glowstone arches over an underground city, then having to torch the living crap out of the ground because light only goes 15 blocks? Then I have the solution for you! The artificial sun! It acts like a sun, looks somewhat like a sun, but it isn't! It ONLY lights downwards, and for a 3x3 chunk radius! However, it only is 'on' during the day, for balance issues and what-not.
Here's how it is made: = glowstone
The reason diamonds are involved is because it supposedly refracts the light, potentially making it stronger! Or for balance, either one.
Anyways, rate, comment subscribe constructively criticize/compliment/generally hate on this idea, and enjoy!
I don't see why it should only work during the day, or only work downwards. I'd be nice if it was just a very bright light that could carry further than one glowstone block alone. I also don't think it should travel infinitely. Maybe it could just brightly illuminate a 25x25x25 area around it. You could use them as floodlights basically.
Still, that makes it sort of useless. Only the small amount of people who want to build huge underground cities would ever use this.
Maybe for quarries? (Quarry in Minecraft = big rectangle/square that goes all the way down to bedrock from the surface [in case you didn't already know.])

This is faaaaaar too overpowered. And once night comes your "underground city" is suddenly full of monsters. I do support some from of higher-powered torches, but not to this extent.

Oh. In that case, that is extremely overpowered. A few diamonds and glowstone can save you from useing a ton of torches?
I edited the OP to include that the artificial sun only works during day-time.

Put a sky light, no diamonds wasted.
