Ok, so I've been mindlessly working on a castle whenever I need a break from my full-time job and realized that it's become quite intricate/large. Here's a screenshot of what I have so far (which only shows the front half of the castle due to the clipping plane cutting out the back half:
First of all, I am using WorldEdit, not building this thing block by block; I have spare time, but not spare years to devote to Minecraft.
Therein lies the idea though. What if I didn't have to use something like WorldEdit to build this thing in less than a decade? What if there was actually a point to having a huge area devoted to farm-land, an armory full of weaponry, and giant gates/walls/ramparts?
What if I could build a house (which would basically need to consist of a set number of beds/materials/etc. and it would provide me with the equivalent number of peon-like bots? Maybe I could also define another building as a blacksmith area (which would need furnaces, etc.) and I could define farmland/mining areas, etc. Then set my bots into action by giving them each a role (maybe by handing them a pick or hoe or something.
They'd have to come back to eat, so you'd have a reason to have farmland. You'd have peons that would harvest/replant the crops and make bread. You could define hunters that would hunt pigs in an area determined by you. You'd have to have ample supply of gold to pay your soldiers, etc.
As for mining and building, you'd set "cuboids" or whatever you want to call them (similar to how WorldEdit works for copying and pasting, etc.). For example, you could box an area and say "mine this out" and the bots would go to work, storing whatever they dug up in whatever chests you put out for them.
Then, you could build a small section of wall, and order the bot builders to repeat it out 40 squares and they'd go get the stone, etc. from the chests and come back and piece it together, brick-by-brick.
You'd basically be a first-person king over your Minecraft kingdom. Eventually you'd wage bot wars against other players in moderately-epic, blocky battles. Or maybe you could spawn waves of attacking monsters? Or maybe they'd just randomly attack as you grow. You could post guards set up patrol paths, etc.
Maybe even have an ally setting where you and several friends' bots could share resources and build or be in-charge of various sections of the kingdom.
Of course, all of this would be optional, so it'd make sense to be a game-mode or a mod I guess.
Anyway, other people may have suggested this before, but I did a search and didn't find much mention of it, so I wanted to toss my vote out there. If I had enough time, I'd try to build it myself. However, until I own my own game company, I don't think it'll be an option for me. :smile.gif:
This is a very well thought out idea you made! Very brilliant, but only an ambitious modder could create this, and finding a way to fit this inside the shelf will be difficult But I don't think it is much of a problem, seeing so many mods similar to this, like MineColony or this mod that lets you wield a staff you will find and control a guard. But overall, this idea is great! I'd really like to see what others may think of this.

[Location Continued] Really, I am also in my ☼fungiwood bed☼ with a nearby ☼adamantine battle axe☼, eating ☼cat tallow roasts☼, with a ☼gold flask☼ of a legendary drink, sunshine (Kind of like 100% ethyl moonshine alcohol, except more dwarven.)
This is the first NPC idea I have read that wasn't totally retarded. Congratulations.
I think this would be better as a mod though.

Thanks! I expect some mixed reactions, but I'm hoping someone will run with it!

Haha, thanks. I think you're right; a mod is probably the best way to avoid conflict with those who like a more vanilla Minecraft, among other reasons.
sry for not reading the entirety of your post, but replying to the jist of it.I don't think NPCs should be addedThis brings it further away from creativity and survival, which are the main staples of minecraft gameplay
I'm not going to pretend that your preface doesn't annoy me a bit. I, personally, like to hear entire thoughts before I form/voice an opinion about them.
However, I can respect your opinion. I believe that people play games for different reasons and *any* direction the game moves in won't appeal to the entire user-base. Ultimately, it's the developers who decide what Minecraft becomes, not us. All we can do is voice our individual opinions and let the chips fall where they may. :smile.gif:
Initially I was thinking that although I liked how it was written, I didn't like the idea because it is essentially a way to get something for nothing (I realise you have to feed them etc.) but then the idea occurred to me: Colony mode! This suggestion seems to lend itself to a different style of gameplay that would work well as a new mode.

I agree; there are definitely some issues that would need to be addressed. Having bots do things at the speed a player could would defeat the purpose of them. I'd like to see some advantages to still doing things yourself, or at least disadvantages to having your peons do work. They should simply exist to help reduce the tedium of the monotonous tasks (like clearing a large underground cavern or leveling terrain) and maybe provide some new entertainment features (like small-scale battles between players and some very basic resource management).
Perhaps bots would perform work at 20% of the speed you could (in terms of mining, chopping, etc.). Maybe even slower since they are fairly autonomous after you set them to their tasks. I believe they should also be significantly weaker than players (to further underscore the need to protect them from harm), and should probably move more slowly. I'd like to see them place/remove a block no more than once every 4 or 5 seconds, for example.
They would need to come home to sleep and eat every day (which makes performing work far from home more inefficient due to commute time to and from the work site - not to mention the issues of running into monsters on their way to work and back) and makes your kingdom shut down at night (like it would in a real kingdom) - well, aside from soldier duties (like guard posts).
-and on that note, if housing is destroyed or there isn't enough food, they should die off and only respawn when the required conditions are met again. Maybe they only check to respawn at the beginning of each day, so if they are killed off by monsters/players or if they simply die off due to starvation, there's a penalty (in terms of time) to regain them.
Heck, maybe you have to actually spend resources to "create" a basic peasant as well. Some combination of gold, food, and cotton or something.
Ideally, I envision the bots as a bridge between the "just me" system of toiling for hours on the (few) boring tasks that come up, and the "WorldEdit" system of getting something for nothing - while also adding a new level of depth to the game in a simplistic manner.
