As we all know gold tools and armor are currently almost never used, with the occasional exception of gold pickaxes which have a very low durability and can only mine stone, cobblestone, coal, and slabs but can mine these things faster than diamond pickaxes.
For all other tools and armor, I think that they should have additional effects to make them useful to the player. The gold pieces of armor would no longer provide any damage protection.
Gold Sword: Does damage and also has a 25% chance of setting mobs on fire.
Gold Shovel: Always yields flint when used to break gravel blocks.
Gold Axe: Killing any mob with the Gold Axe with guarantee a maximum amount of items dropped (ex: killing a cow will always yield two leather, killing a pig will always yield two pork, etc).
Gold Hoe: Each strike against any hostile mob will restore 50% of the hearts taken from the mob and give them to the player (ex: if you hit a zombie with the Gold Hoe and it does 1 heart of damage, it will also restore half of a heart to your own health). This effect will only apply when used against HOSTILE mobs and also against other players if used in SMP. It will NOT apply to neutral mobs such as cows and pigs.
Gold Helmet: Adds an additional 4 bubbles to the player's underwater breathing duration. Does not provide any damage protection.
Gold Chestplate: Allows the player to avoid being seen by hostile mobs unless they are within a distance of 5 blocks. Does not provide any damage protection.
Gold Leggings: Increases walking speed by 15%. Does not provide any damage protection.
Gold Boots: Increases jump height by half of a block, allowing the player to jump over things that are 1.5 blocks tall such as fences.Does not rpovide any damage prtection.

I like the sound of this idea, it'd make gold tools and armor more useful. Maybe have it so golden pickaxes can mine everything iron ones can at high speed? (remember, only 33 uses) Anyway this would be great added to the game. Maybe a mod could be made to add this? :mellow.gif:
I like it more the way it is. Giving gold a bunch of random uses all over the place makes it very hard to balance. And gold isn't magic, so this doesn't make much sense.
Gold is not some life-leeching material. I could see soul sand doing that, were it smeltable into some Nether equivalent of sandstone or something, but even that'd be a meh idea at best. Gold having that use is just bad. None of this is good, honestly.
A ton of random buff uses, none of which make any sense...Really? Just stop.
I think these are good Ideas. Execpt the Chest plate Idea. Thats a bit to much. I mean, harvesting my enemy's life force? How bad ass is that? I want this.
