Dyes are pretty much just for decoration. So why not expand on such dyes? This is the dye overhaul thread. Many possible ways notch could expand on the whole dying system.
1.Universal dyes
Instead of only cloth blocks being able to be colored, how about a sort of "painting" system with the dyes? Add dye to active inventory slot, right-click on block and that paints it. It would only work on certain blocks, and not blocks like ore blocks, soil blocks or decor.
2.Tinting and mixing system
It would be nice to be able to mix any color with any other color. It would be simple, too. First you have to make a mixing bowl.
Then you place it on a block, and then you use it. You can take any dye, and mix it with any other dye. You could produce almost any color possible.
3.Adding personality to decor
Should paintings start out blank, and you have to paint them? ABSOLUTELY. Think of the personality you could add to your houses if you could hand-craft your own paintings. First you would make the paintbrush (Cloth above stick), and then select the size of painting, then it brings up a drawing gui, and you can paint on it with the mouse. You could also select the dyes you are currently holding.
Also, then it should be added where you could "draw" on walls and blocks. All you would have to do is put the paintbrush into a crafting square, put the dye in it and it will be ready to paint with. To paint, you would hold down right-click, and move your cursor across a wall. Paint would wash away if you put water on it, or it goes away with age. This would be extremely useful for marking caves. And in multiplayer, admins can set how long it takes before paint goes away. In singleplayer, it would only go away if the block is removed.
Lastly, stickers. Stickers are made with slimeballs and paintings. You use dyes to make the sticker after shaping it, and you can set them on blocks from any direction. You can also remove them for later.
4.Dyed armor and tools
Put the tool or armor into a crafting slot, insert dye and profit with new cool-looking armor. It would also give the excuse to render certain armors to make them shine, so gold armor would look really great and whatnot.
5.Use of dyes in weapons and tools.
Dyed arrows - Marks a spot where the arrow hits. If it hits the enemy, it changes it's color.
Paintball - Wherever it hits when thrown, it sets down a spot letting you know where it hit.
Paintbomb - Explodes, painting every block near it.
6.A few useless tricks with dyes
1. Painting other players.
2. Painting mobs.
3. Hiding doors and walls.
4. Making a rainbow house.
5. Making trails.
6. Pimpin' out your minecart. Giving it stripes, flames and even decals.
7. Putting up funny paintings in your enemy's house.
8. Becoming a painter and selling your artwork.
9. Giving your pet wolf a distinctive green and orange sheen.
10. PAINTBALL RAVE PARTY AWWW YEAAAA
11. Paint war.
12. Marking your pirate booty on an island in multiplayer for others to find.
So that's all that I can think of. These would not only make dyes useful, but fun and entertaining.
Any criticism is appreciated.

I'm working on a cool texturepack! You can check it out by clicking the above image!
1. I don't think we need to dye any blocks other then wool. Doesn't seem that needed, but could be cool.
2. This would probably be more trouble then it's worth. We don't need every color ever.
3. Yes! Custom paintings! I had the same idea, here.
4. This seems a bit unneeded, and somewhat unrealistic. You'd have a hard time dyeing iron or diamond. I think we just need wool clothes.
5. Those would be really cool! Now I sort of see the point of dyeing any blocks.
6. All of those sound cool. I support this idea, but it may be more trouble to implement then it's worth.
All of this, except 6 sounds sort of meh. And as for "paint bombs", nah. Paintballs should just put a temporary paint mark on blocks and players hit. SMP folk could create more games with that sort of addition.
Also, there's a mod for custom paintings (llama's idea) so you can become a painter :tongue.gif:
I kind of know how painting stuff could work. It could do something like,
(change color between x and y) x and y being dye colors on a color wheel. Black, white and gray dyes would change the saturation and value. Colors would change the hue. The GUI would show in a window what you'd get, but players would have to experiment to get what they want. (No mixing chart) It would be very useful if there are a lot of groups on a server with different color schemes. I also would support a basic shirt or scrimmage vest-type thing that can be dyed. (Virtual gang war, anyone?)
We have 16 colors of dye, why not use those dyes as components in crafting paint? The painting system could be kept simple by using the same 16 colors obtainable by dye. I'd also like to see the ability to paint switches (buttons, levers, plates, etc). This way the switches themselves could be labeled by color rather than having to use signs or by placing them on colored wool blocks.

First off, the paintbomb was just sort of a far-fetched idea. It was just a "Only if this idea is liked, it's good". It would cause waay too much lag.
And yes, games would be made. Especially paintball wars.

That's a great idea! And the "Team clothes" could be done either by custom skins the players choose to wear, or using dyed armors.
Painted wooden houses are the most common homes (or second after apartment blocks) in large parts of the world and have been for hundreds of years. Even with the fire hazard I'd love a homey painted wooden house. A more warm and cozy retreat away from the grand stone structures.
We don't need millions of colors, even 8 or 16 would do wonders by adding to the aesthetics, immersion and enjoyment without affecting the gameplay or game balance.
You could start out with the 16 default colors, and mix them to your likings. It wouldn't be overly-complicated, and it wouldn't force you to mix.

Firstly, you could only obtain the first default 16 dyes, but the only way to get different colors would be through mixing them. I believe this could be done by image shading. Taking one overlay image and another overlay image, putting them in front of each-other, resetting the transparency and adding to the block.
Lastly, the only blocks I wouldn't want to see be colored would be bedrock, unrefined ore-blocks or entity blocks like leaves, flowers or mushrooms.
And I appreciate the feedback, guys :smile.gif:
