WARNING! This idea is probably very flawed, but I thought I would throw it out there.
So here's what went down:
I was playing Minecraft earlier today when I decided to go into the Nether for glowstone. I was walking around and realized that there was a ton of netherrack just lying around with no purpose other than controlled fires for decoration or defense systems. I had a diamond sword in hand and wondered "WOW, wouldn't this make an awesome sword upgrade?", and thus, the idea was born.
The concept, balance, and more:
By using a diamond sword, you could cover it in netherrack, therefore causing it to become extremely flammable and ignite. However, due to the fact that netherrack has extremely low durability, the sword would break as quickly as a golden sword. However, you will need to carry flint and steel with you to use it. Every time you use the flame sword, the flint and steel's condition meter will drain. The flame sword would deal as much damage as a stone sword, but would cause any block or creature that the player attacks with it burst into flames.
Eh, well that would actually make swords significantly worse. What if its raining? I mean the best thing about diamond is its durability D:.
I would most want this as like, I dunno, put the netherrack on the sword and the next three hits light them on fire instead of dealing damage. But frankly either is too little of a difference to use. Netherrack used in an igniter thing trap thing would be cool, but cant think of anything else netherrack could be used for.

i personally don't know what to say... if this is at all a good idea to other players you should have to make a diamond sword normally first. Then you would get 20 netherrack. You would then make something like a netherrack handle piece. You would need 4 handle pieces to complete the handle. The handle is made in a 3x3 crafting table 2 blocks in the bottom middle of the 3x3 crafting box and 3 on the top row of the 3x crafting box to make a sword handle piece.

(sorry i don't know how to use the legends likes the ones used in the original post).
Do this 4 times then put it in a 2x2 or 3x3 crafting box the diamond sword would be placed about the netherrack and then a flaming sword. (this way its at least not overpowered with little use of resources). And as for the damage why not make it do two hearts extra then the diamond sword or just 1 heart damage and when you smack an enemy 3 times it lights them on fire as said in the above post.(this may be a bit much, but what ever).

Woah, waaaaay too complicated for one sword.

Yeah i know but when it comes to giants and dragons possibly going to enter the game 7 hearts damage or 1-2 hearts, then the monster getting lit on fire hey is that really that complicated?
Does it really need to be so complicated? What ever happened to style points? I'm for this just for the badassery of it all
Well it was just an idea it doesn't have to be that exactly, how about just two handle pieces then, so 10 netherrack+diamond sword... first of all if its going to be a flame sword which is probably powerful, it would need to be balanced and take a fair amount of resources. It should do a certain amount of damage. And should most certainly be fair enough to the point of where it doesn't one hit everything. Also since creepers are 'splosive if you hit one with the sword they should blow up because gunpowder+flame=BOOM!

Haha yes! I like where thats going! It would give a reason not to have the sword....or provide much hilarity and cursing
so were going to have to make a good diamound sword just to make a even more crapy sword??
you missed the whole "for the sake of badassery". If I gave you a flaming sword would you complain? I wouldn't. I'd go hell yes and kill things with style.

Well OK lets change this a bit. How about since giants and dragons etc. eventually probably will enter the game, the sword could do 10 damage on huge monsters. If dragons do get implemented in the game and breath fire the sword can take some of the damage when fighting a dragon. Creepers would instantly 'splode! because fire+gunpowder=BOOM! Spiders would die in 1 slash. Animals will run away from you at ludicrous speed if they see you with this because animals say no no to fire. Monsters in the nether are not effected in anyway except for the ghast, if you fishing rod him toward you then hes right there to be slashed.(notch will more then likely add more nether monsters besides zombie pigman and ghasts). zombies take one hit and get lit on fire. Since zombies are the weakest why not give them one strength and make it so that the sword only lights them on fire and does not further melee damage(this shouldn't be a problem since they will die after being lit on fire for a while anyway). Wolfs that you have not tamed will look at you strangely when you get near them with the sword and may attack you because of the terrible entity in the sword. The wolfs sense danger in it. If you manage to knock the ghasts fire ball back its 1.5x as strong. If you hit an arrow that a skeleton shot at you it lights on fire and does 1 extra damage to the skeleton. Spider jockeys take two hits from the sword, one for the skeleton and one for the spider. Slimes will not be effected at all by the sword(imagine you having a fire sword and it going into a pile of slime coming out covered in it and being completely useless), however the sword won't become useless it will only be useless for 30 seconds. This effect still works even if you put the sword away.
This may be a bit too complicated again, but the sword should not be overall too powerful. These are just ideas, so by all means they are yours to manipulate. Tweak them, get a new idea from them, just think about it.

If anything, I think just being able to craft a Netherrack sword that inflicts substantial damage and ignites the target, but has very low durability, might work out slightly better. Not sure what to do about other tools, though.
well heres my take on this.
Nethrack is pretty much rock (you need a pick to get it) soo how about you craft it like a stone sword? it has the durability of a stone sword but lights its enemies on fire for 3 hearts of damage. How about another badass thing to it. if you attack wood or wool of flammable materials they catch on fire.
also it would be a a pretty intermediate stage of the game before you even go to the nether. You need a diamond pick to get the obsidian after all.
