It's very simple. Maps and clocks would be awesome if they were placed.
But....why?
Reason 1: Decoration. Who wouldn't want to spice up their home with a clock, or a map to make your look adventorous?
Reason 2: Underground Convenience: Lets say you have an underground home, or an underground mine. Perhaps you want to know what the surrounding area looks like. Why not, instead of just holding the map, place it on a black so you can take a quick peak? Or for a clock, you may not know what time it is. So use your clock. But you don't want to lose this useful item! So, place it on the wall and you'll always have it right there for you.
Reason 3: Helping Other Players: Perhaps, online, you just created a server. But the players are new and need to know the way around. So, at spawn, or wherever, you can place a map. This way, instead of having to give dozens of players a brand new map, they can just look around for where they need to go!
Reason 4: It's easy. Just like any other block, you can place it. How much code needs to be implented for this? Not much, I presume. So just have it placeable!
A clock would use the "design" as a torch: it hangs off the wall, or stands upright on a block. Whereas a map would, when placed horizontally, would be a covering of the top of a block. And maybe you could place your map on the wall, where it would either come out 1x1, 4x4 or 8x8, like a painting. But bigger.
how about you use the clock as part of another crafting recipe that makes a grandfather clock if you place it on the floor and a coo-coo clock if you place it on the wall :biggrin.gif:

There are very few problems in life that can't be fixed by the proper application of high explosives.
this combined with the other idea of choosing the zoom on a map would be very good. you could help new people in your server. create war rooms with detailed maps of villages/towns. map out the countryside. and just do a lot of cool things. I had the same idea when maps came out (i didn't know about this place in the forums) I absolutely love it. 10/10 for you
