It's a pretty simple concept: being able to carry certain items with your left hand, using them with right-click.
Then you might wonder...
Why?
Because it would bring more dynamism to the game and a bit of realism as well (you know, hitting stuff with a sand block doesn't make much sense)
How would it work?
Tools would be held on right rand, while blocks/other items would be held with the player's left hand.
Tool Dual wielding would NOT be possible.
Images shamelessly taken from the other post.
Imagine the possibilities!
You could quickly react to lava while mining.
It would be possible to prepare the soil with a hoe and to place seeds right after.
You could explore dungeons and caves prepared with a sword, while placing torches (I'm NOT suggesting that torches should work while being held. Notch has already said that's hard to do.)
Building and removing blocks would be much easier!
Now you might be thinking "Hell Artie, this seems nice, but I think it has been suggested before"
Ladies and gentlemen, let me present to you Blending or Dynamic combination/crafting.
Basically, it allows you to combine the two items you're holding on the run, to generate many effects.
Example: You're holding a shovel on your right hand and a sand block on your left hand and you see an enemy coming towards you. You press the mouse buttons at the same time (or you hit a key in your keyboard) and you combine the sand and the shovel, which results in you tossing sand at your target with the shovel.
Ok, that was a crappy example, but think of the possibilities!
Combining lava/water/slimeballs witha sword, to create a fiery/water/poisonous sword.
Blending shovels and blocks, to create multiple effects.
Creating fire with sticks of stones
And the list goes on.
I believe these ideas would be great additions to the upcoming "adventure update", as they would make gameplay more dynamic.
i like the idea but there are some problems.
1) how would you use the scroll wheel to change items.
2) left clicking already makes you attack and right clicking makes you place a block. you cant place blocks with 2 hands. think about it.
and now some revisions.
1) maybe make it so that one hand only carries tools (fixes the right//left click problem)
2) maybe if you hold down a key while scrolling it changes 1 hand and if you dont hold the key it changes the other.
3) make it that tools dont work as well when dual wielding (its hard to break a block when carrying some dirt)
4) dual wield swords but each individual sword does less dmg but together do more. both would get used up at the same rate though.
Other then that great idea 4/5
and yes this has been posted manymanymany times before. i just only responded to this one.
EDIT: oh and the pictures were taken in alpha yet you made this thread today. HOW?
What I'm about to suggest has been suggested before a couple of times, but not this way.
I'm talking about ...
Off hand use

Anyway, tell me what you think.
