I like the idea of mixing gold with redstone for various uses. Perhaps it could be used to craft logic gates that only take up one block of space rather than larger amounts of space required with the current system. Compact timers would also be nice, in which signals could be emitted or delayed by a number of (real-life) seconds set by the player.
For example, maybe the entrance to your base uses a hatch drawbridge over a lava pit to keep the nasties out. With the use of a timer block and a button, the bridge could be configured to stay closed long enough to get the player across safely before opening back up in order to keep mobs out.
since gold is a soft metal and its not practical to use for tools and armour, how bout more uses for gold such as golden door, golden pressure plate, golden bucket etc?
Iron buckets would be better than gold, and we already have them (iron buckets). The pressure plate seems sorta silly but I guess that and the door could be "just for looks" and have the durability of wood or something.

the idea might be good for making fancy-shmancy palaces. However i like the idea of making gold into a circuit. Maybe you could craft a compact clockwork repeater or something like that.

the search bar is lonely because nobody ever uses it
If you can't use gold to make tools, you can't make doors or buckets either i'd say. But how about equipable jewelery that give you some kind of bonus, like in Terraria (minecraft-based platformer)?
actually gold can be used to make tools but they suck cos gold is soft.
Another possibility would be to use the gold nugget and grind it up to four pieces of gold dust that can be mixed with redstone dust. One piece of redstone dust and one piece of gold dust would give you two pieces of super conductive redstone dust. This new redstone wire could have a unlimited signal range (or at least a much longer range than the current limit of 15 blocks that normal redstone wires have).
I'm pretty sure that the range limit on redstone dust is a technical limitation of the game, but maybe the gold+redstone dust could be used as a sort of repeater that doesn't have a delay.

Gate blocks like an inverter ("not") and "and" and "or" gates would definitely make things much nicer and simpler for redstone circuitry, although some might argue that it would make things too easy. I certainly wouldn't mind integrated redstone circuits though.

You can already accomplish this with redstone repeaters.
A golden bucket of lava wouldnt dissapear when you use it to smelt...
Makes little sense as gold has a lower melting point then iron. Then again this is minecraft so I suppose "making sense" is a non issue.
I think the dissipating bucket thing is just a flaw in the smelting UI anyway. It's like notch while brainstorming was like
Notch ;"hmm hey wouldn't it be cool if a furnace could be stoke by lava!"
Someone other then notch; "what about the bucket? how will we return that to the player? wouldn't we have to code in a behavior for a bucket?"
Notch ; "Ohh... Umm... Naa! just make it eat the bucket like it was a piece of coal! It's more balanced that way anyway lawl!"

Gold would probably be best used in decoration, as currency, or electricity.
Other than that its pretty good as it is.

Creeper Jockeys, Because Screw Your Sense of Safety
Take a look at this thread for suggestions about more redstone equipment and devices.
Personally I think using Gold is not a bad idea for some devices, because gold is a fairly hard to get material at times and some devices could be purely for luxury and ease of use. It adds a dimension to Gold's usefulness in the redstone department.
P.S.: Just slapping this in there, but while we're at it, Ender Pearls don't have a use yet either. Maybe combining Gold and Ender Pearls could do something special?
