As it stands, slimes are boring. They're easy to fight, and they have a spawn pattern that doesn't make them stand out much.
My suggestion is that we have caves sometimes have areas covered in slime, much like snow covers snow biomes. You can get slime balls from the slime that covers the floor, and slimes only spawn in areas covered by slime, similarly to a dungeon mob spawner.
This would make it easier to get more slime for sticky pistons, as well as make acquiring slime a more targeted, but difficult task, so you aren't just randomly wandering around.
And naturally slimes should have a chance of leaving slime trails on floors where they walk (it would only make sense, after all).
I like this. It makes sense. Though only the largest kind of slime could do this, and they would need at least 4 slime puddles in a square to spawn, this way we don't get huge numbers of them in exponential amounts.
