Hello! I was thinking last night about how ladders and stairs take up so much room considering the fact that thatmust be on something, like laddering must be on walls and stairs must be on a block. Well, what if there was a ladder and stair case that you could build that would extend/retract when you right clicked it? and you would only need 1 and it would extend... lets say at max 4-5 blocks? You would craft the ladder like: = redstone
I'm not sure about the stair case though... maybe redstone in the middle of a steel stair case... What do you think? should notch make this idea?
Retractable ladders have been suggested before. I liked the way it was presented... let me see if I can find the thread.
EDIT: It was here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/304072-retractable-ladder/ There wasn't really much there, actually (I'd misremembered), but I still quite like my comment there about two ladders connected with iron as a potential recipe. Of course, if you wanted one that extended further (and was therefore more useful), that wouldn't be a very good recipe...
EDIT (again): What if you made it like this:
where the stick is a ladder, and it created a block which you could right-click on and put more ladder pieces in. Then you could completely customise how many blocks it extended to (up to a limit, of course. A full stack might be a bit much).
He has a good idea... I like his... but the fact of putting 1 ladder in the middle and getting 2 from it makes no since. I like mine because if these are going to be redstone wiring compatible, might as well use redstone in the recipe.
maybe something like this:
Mushroom = redstone
the reason for the chest is because it will extend, and you must supply the ladders for it by ctrl+right click then putting ladders in a 3x3 area, then by rightclicking it, it will extend by the amount of space and ladders it has. and it will give you 1 to make them hard to get.
How's that?
OH WAIT!!!!
rope ladders! you bild them, keep them in your backpack, then find where you want it, place it, and then right click it and it will "un-roll" into a long ladder!
Yeah, that seems sound. There's no ctrl-clicking in the game yet, though, so that might be a bit strange - perhaps right-click to add more ladder, and it can ONLY be extended via redstone (lever, button, whatever), rather than by hand?
EDIT: It would perhaps make sense for the block to take up two spaces - it would appear as a block with a ladder on one side of it, and when not extended just act as a single ladder.
Rope ladders would work too, but there still needs to be some way or limiting or controlling how far they extend (or unfurl), otherwise they become too powerful and obsolete regular ladders. 6 string is quite expensive, to be sure, but if that gives me a ladder than unfurls as far as there's room, why would I ever use a regular ladder again (after a while, many people have more string than they know what to do with)?
Retractable ladders will probably still be doable with sticky pistons. You just need to place the piston so that it pushes the ladder sideways. They may have been programmed to break stuff like ladders if moved, though. The recent video didn't demonstrate its effect on ladders.

Maybe 4 blocks standard, but if you right click it, it gives you an option to provide more rope ladders for extended length, and an option that let's you chose how far it will extend, but with a limit based on how many rope ladders are provided?

Make what? ladders couldn't because there would be no way to get to the ladder... there would be a block in the way
