I've been toying around with skinning and textureing lately came to an odd problem.
Usually skinners will sometimes make smoothstone look more manufactured. Most of the time with great results when used in a building, but when you go spelunking in a natural cavern the chiseled looking tiles can look a little off.
Also I've noticed since the implementation of natural sandstone. Seeing a artificed looking pattern on the sides of sandstone looks quite odd in a natural setting. some skinners opt to remove this pattern but at the cast of it's attractive pattern in buildings.
What I propose to remedy this, is a function that allows alternate block skins. For example by holding a key (or toggleing) you can switch to a different skinning of the same block. So when you place it like normal the block uses it's alternative skin so long as this button is activated.
This will be handy not only for skinners but people who are happy using the default textures pointing back to my sandstone example.
This is not a dire need but I believe it could open up a world of possibility in the creative side of minecraft.
(if this has been suggested before sorry. I did however do a search for "Alternative Blocks" and it yeilded nothing)
I've mentioned something similar but never suggested it.
I would like to, somehow, be able to turn cobblestone into a more brick like pattern. Most texture packs do this already but it would be nice if it was an option in game. Why not extend it to more blocks? Natural sandstone looking different then man-made. A crafted form of smoothstone that looks different then natural

This would be a GREAT addition to Minecraft, too bad Notch uses only ONE image for the blocks, this suggestion would break that.
BUT then again, he was going to be forced to use more than one image eventually, so why not do it now? It would probably be a good idea to add the Painterly Pack as default alternative textures to get all those alternative textures done quickly. The simplicity of this suggestion is a bit questionable, but it doesn't sound difficult.
