With the addition of Pistons, I started to think what if you could move water/lava along an open tube to some desired end with a modified piston set up to function as a pump. (pipe dream anyone?)
The only problem is that water as it is currently in the game would not drain or fill new areas... you'd basically be making a really expensive bucket.

Actually pistons don't use iron. Since redstone is super common, it could be more economical if the pipes don't require iron.
Rather than use a bucket to create a source, you could move a high volume of pressurized water. So rather than have the water "flow" it's being pushed along. This would make obsidian mining much easier....
