Searched and found a poorly written, months old, unbumped, unseen thread with an idea that only vaguely resembles mine, so chill.
Minecraft is an amazing game with amazing features. Needless to say, it goes beyond breaking blocks in the sense that you can make gigantic towns and cities with help from others. However, the social aspect of Minecraft can be enhanced greatly, and I present an idea that can do just that: Player Shops.
What are player shops? They are 1x1 (single block) creations. The whole premises of it allows a Player Shop to be set up in any location to allow for easy trading. When first placed down, it can be stocked with nearly any item in the game that people will buy. Each item can cost any quantity of any material, which is up to the preference of the creator. To buy an item you simply drag the cost of one item into an exchange slot and you get the sold item in return.
That would be the interface if you were a buyer. If you owned the chest, you can select the name of the Chest, what items you wish to sell, and what items you want in exchange (for the last option you can do this by searching the item by name and then selecting the quantity;similar to buying in the Runescape Grand Exchange for any fellow Scapers).
The chest should be a result of high development and teamwork and as such require some more uncommon materials to create. My basic suggestion would be the use of a chest (duh), a dispenser, iron, and perhaps gold. If anything there can be some more common materials used for more of a town sense earlier on, but it's optional, and would represent more of a "phase" for towns if it needed more expensive materials.
Why put in the Trading Chest? As stated it will greatly improve the social experience of Minecraft by making private shops actually possible;as of now private shops are a waste of time when you can spend the time gathering the resource yourself instead of taking your chances with a busy shopkeeper, or when you can just go to someone and barter. The trade chest will allow for actual shops which in turn help create a more social environment, and more convenience in towns.
There are few to no downsides to the Trading Chest. If someone was to place huge prices for simple materials, they will not be bought, period. If someone chooses to do the opposite and offer high end tools and items for sticks to spoil people, it's their loss and a Dispenser would have done the job admirably in the first place.
There IS the issue of finding out what to do if it is broken;I suggest making it so that once you make another after one is broke it will contain any materials previously held by the first. This prevents telling friends to break your chest to teleport your items to you via chest as the only reason you'll be doing this is for space, which is now not the best idea if the chest itself takes more to make than it can hold, which it should.
In all the Trading Chest will be a fun experience that will greatly aid many varying factors of Minecraft including but not limited to the social, teamwork aspect, the idea of towns, and of course, fun.
These already exist in some servers. My clan has it, for example. I don't know how, but I'm sure if you ask someone there they might be able to tell you how we do it.

I was thinking along the lines of making it a much simpler operation with no plugins required.
Also, it is an interesting idea. I think we should just be able to request a trade with another player by aiming at them with the mouse and pressing a keyboard key (default should be C as it is close to WASD and easy to reach).

All we need is a trading GUI where you can right click on someone and trade with them. That way, people can't claim they will give you something and just leave. You put in the items you want to trade, and when both players hit accept, it switches the items.

Would work too but it would be helpful to have an automatic shop. Less convenient but you don't have to stand in a shop like a tool if you specifically want a shop, my idea was made for that.
