Disclainmer: I'm not the best searcher, but I did try to find a similar suggestion, non was found. If a similar suggestion was already made, disregard this post.
In the last couple of updates a few block recipes were changed; bricks and glowstone. Basically, they were reduced from being crafted from a 3x3 recipe to a 2x2 recipe.
I think that it is quite reasonable to change other item to block recipes such as lapis, gold, etc to be crafted in 2x2 squares. The obvious advantage of this is the increased accessibility as a building block, but a disadvantage is less storage efficiency. In exchange for a little less storage, in my opinion, is worth the extra versatility in the creative department.
However I wouldn't stop there, if blocks are created out of a 2x2 square why would stairs be created with three columns and three rows?
Stairs should be simply crafted by how they look like from side on; Slabs should be crafted how they look from side on;
Obviously, this would impact the amount of stairs created in the final product possibly from four stairs to three.
All these slight adjustments are simply logical. The recipe for stairs always annoyed me, and since Notch has already started a tread of toning down the necessary items to create blocks why not complete the rest of the recipes.
All constructive opinions welcome, if all you want to post is '**** idea' or 'great idea' or just quote somebody else, kindly go away.
