My suggestion was, with a Sword out, having a secondary feature that would bring the sword around in front of the player. This could serve several purposes:
Dampening explosion damage by 50%, rounded down
Repelling - maybe even Reflecting back Skeleton Arrows
(Optional) Blocking mob "touch" damage completely - the mob bouncing back from recoil (As if they were just hit)
Of course, something this useful could be considered over-powered without certain restrictions. Therefore, it would make sense to have these conditions apply for a successful block:
While defending, you are completely immobile. (This would also make defending while in water impractical, due to risk of drowning)
The player cannot change his/her field of vision (except, perhaps, up and down.)
A successful block can only occur if the attack comes from your field of vision (back attacks still incur full damage)
You cannot use blocks and items (like food) while defending.
This idea came about after running into one too many skeleton dungeons, where they held a distinct advantage over me: a half dozen of them all shooting into one general opening with rather great precision. Albeit a rather rare scenario - would still help even the playing-field in this regard, while adding to the combat system currently in place.
Looking forward to many fun and exciting additions to Minecraft regardless, and super excited for 1.7! Keep at it! =D
I guess it would be a good addition to the game, but it needs some tweaking/balancing not to make it overpower as you said. For example, you should be able of blocking only physical attacks and it wouldn't absorb 100% damage, let's say only 50%.
^^; I agree with you that it needs tweaking - I come from a more "survival" aspect from the game than a builder, so I'm a bit biased, but I'd love to see the idea played around with =)
