So, here's just an idea I'd like to toss out there for a new kind of Stone.
Painstone (or some name like that), which would just be found as small patches, rarely, buried in the Nether. Painstone would project an aura around it that would periodically cause minor damage.
On its own, the aura would be a 5x5x5 cube, with the stone at its center, but the aura effect would work much like water, in that it would go around other blocks. The aura may be invisible, or it might be a faint, mostly transparent coloration in the air.
Any other kind of block will block the effect, and if the block of painstone is entirely surrounded it will be effectively inert.
This could have interesting applications as far as trap design, especially if it were affected by redstone charge.

make the ore inert, once smelted, it is redstone powered
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
After 10:30 PST, my IQ drops to around that of a shovel, please disregard anything I say after aforementioned time, it will likely not make any sense, and is best ignored.
Presentation: 5/5
No grammar or spelling to be fixed, formatting is fine.
Originality: 4/5
I have not seen any suggestions before like this, but the idea of a life sucking stone is not terribly original.
Detail: 4/10
This is one of your mistakes. There are many things missing, such as any smeltings, craftings, redstone interactions, rarities, time, and damage. Please, add more details on these! It is hard to understand what this would be like if there are such few details.
Theme: 10/10
Perfectly thematic, fits with pseudo-fantasy.
Balance: 7/10
I take away points here only because it is hard to judge it with such few details. If you add more, I will reevaluate this.
Usefulness: 6/10
I hate to say it but this would not be very useful. There are many other ways to damage things in traps, and this would fit only help certain machines that cannot make do with the things that damage we have now. However, one redeeming quality is that it does make the nether more useful, which is something we very much need.
