Obsidian is currently one of the most unique building materials in the game, yet it also has no use in crafting. In real life obsidian has the following properties that can be worked into the game.
1. It is as brittle as glass, which ingame could work out to low durability, equivilant to maybe wood.
2. It can become razor sharp, meaning despite it's low durability, it can probably exceed diamond in terms of cutting power.
3. It is much stronger than gold.
For these reasons, as far as tools go, I beleive it should be capable of doing anything a diamond tool could do, but at a slightly increased rate similart to that of gold. In other words, it would be an all round improvement to gold tools, as it would have the same fast rate, slightly higher durability (not saying much when comparing to gold), and being capable of mining through any material (asides bedrock, of course). Obviously, obsidian tools would be the last tier of tools, being better than diamond in all but durability, so of course, there has to be something to balance it out. This is what the poll is for.
Depending on poll results, there will be changes to the usual setup. For example, instead of making a T shape with obsidian and 2 sticks, as tool making is usually done, obsidian could require some degree of processing. The actual way it gets processed is up for discussion, but my idea is as follows....
The first step is to get 8 blocks of obsidian to make a special obsidian furnace. This furnace runs on "redcoal", which is created by crafting 5 redstone and 4 coal in a pattern similar to TNT. The material that gets refined is unusual as well. First you craft an obsidian block into 3 "obsidian shards" (similar to making planks). After that is done, you arange them in the crafting box to make 2 specific shapes, "obsidian blades" ( made with 3 horizontal shards) and "obsidian connectors" (made with a cross shape of shards) After they are crafted, you put them in the obsidian furnace fueled by "redcoal". When that is done, you can then craft different items with specific patterns of the 2 different peices, such as an obsidian pickaxe, which is built like a normal pickaxe except the 3 peices at the top are intead a blade, a connector, and another blade.
Hopefully the long process of making it, along with low durability equivelant to wood or iron, will balance the fact that it will have the rate of gold, and have the range of use that diamond has.
In addition to it becoming the next tier of tools, another idea for using obsidian is for less generic uses. One idea I have is the ability to use such wedges mentioned earlier instead of flint to make arrows that are twice as powerful.
Also, the obsidian furnace could be used as a very quick but costly way to smelt things, as the "redcoal" could make smelting go by in a third of the time or less.
Also, using large amounts of obsidian shards could be used to make plates useful for creating high quality obsidian armour that negates all damage untill it is destroyed, which would most likely happen at the rate of iron or wood like the tool counterparts.
I honestly like that Obsidian is only used for Portals and if you want a very strong (albeit rather ugly imo) structure.

A mod would be ok...Being in the game no.The this is your makeing it too complicated with th furnece and red coal.Obsidain is very diffucult to mine with all the lava and mobs. Why make it even more complicated? maybe stay with the furnece but no redcoal.
